Northeastern defeated the Georgia State Panthers, 1-0, at Parsons Field to get back to winning ways.
Ryan Burnham scored his first goal of the season in the contest, which marked the Huskies 200th win in program history.
In the first half neither team was able to carve out an opener, with Northeastern forcing two saves out of CJ Cochran and the Panthers getting three shots on
Oliver Blum.
Ricardo McDonald had the best look on net of the half for the Huskies when he was put through on goal by
Dante Marini, but the forward's quick, right-footed effort was saved away well by Cochran.
However, the best chance for either team in the opening 45 minutes came on a Georgia State corner kick. Bo Stroup played a high, in-swinging ball to the back post where Evan Scott was stationed. Scott rose highest among the crowd in the box, but because of pressure from
Ambry Moss, he was only able to head his shot over the crossbar.
The second half saw the game jump to life, with Northeastern having two fantastic opportunities to open the scoring shortly after the break. Second half substitute
Mike Kennedy played a ball across the face of goal and found
Josh Semerene unmarked on the back post. Cochran was quick to react however, getting over to his left to smother the shot.
Barely a minute later, Semerene turned provider for a chance for Kennedy. Cochran was not able to effectively clear Semerene's lofted cross, and only parried it into the path of Kennedy, who settled the ball and took a shot, only to see it carom off the post and behind for a goal kick.
Northeastern had 11 shots in the second half of the game, and that pressure paid off with 11 minutes left to go. Kennedy played a corner short for Marini, who in turn had his shot blocked. The ball bounced around in the penalty area, eventually squirting free for an on-rushing Burnham. The senior captain unleashed a vicious first-time strike that was past the Georgia State keeper before he could even react. For Burnham, the goal marked his first tally of the season, as well as his first points of the year.
The Panthers responded by putting cross after cross into the box, but the Huskies defense, along with Blum, repelled them all, sealing the victory. The win ended a three-match winless streak for Northeastern, who will be in action next at Hofstra on Oct. 12.
