Northeastern defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2-1 in overtime, on Sunday afternoon.
Josh Semerene and
Laurence Braude both scored their first goal of the season in the game, as the Huskies battled back from a goal down for their third win of the year.
“Today was a massive win, being on the road against a good Wisconsin-Milwaukee team,“ said head coach
Brian Ainscough. “We were missing some key players, but were still to put in a good performance.”
Following an unremarkable first 45 minutes, the game sprung to life in a second half that included two goals, eight yellow cards and 14 shots combined.
Following a corner kick for Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Huskies were whistled for a handball in the box in the 58th minute. Gerardo Saavedra stepped up to take the resulting penalty, burying it past keeper
Oliver Blum's outstretched left hand for his 3rd goal of the year.
Just like against Wright State, the Huskies responded well to going down a goal. A good spell of possession saw Northeastern create multiple chances around the Panthers penalty area but no shots on goal.
The Huskies would eventually equalize in the 69th minute.
Dante Marini, having another strong game in the early stages of the season, took control of the ball at the top right corner of the 18-yard box and twisted and turned his way past the defense and deep into the penalty area. His shot from close-range was straight at the keeper, but rebounded right back to Marini. The ball bounced off Marini's chest before bouncing to a wide-open Semerene to hammer the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the year. For Marini, the assist gave him seven points, enough for the team lead in the early goings of the season.
Northeastern continued to press, with Marini in particular looking dangerous any time he had the ball at his feet. Neither team could score a winning goal in regulation so for the second straight game the Huskies played overtime.
The Huskies gained the upper hand in the contest as time ticked on, outshooting the Panthers 10-4 in the second half. That advantage carried over into the extra period when Semerene was brought down in the box in the 96th minute, earning a penalty for the Huskies. With the game hanging in the balance, Braude stepped up to the spot and drilled the penalty kick home, giving Northeastern a hard-fought win.
Ainscough praised the work of his forwards, Semerene in particular, after the match, saying “…he covered a lot of ground and caused havoc for the defense as the lone striker today. He was one of our top performers along with Laurence (Braude) and Dante (Marini).”
Northeastern now sits at 3-1-1 and will return home to Parsons Field on Sept. 17 to take on Fairfield at 6 p.m.
