Northeastern fell to Holy Cross, 2-1, Tuesday evening in Worcester, Mass.
Dante Marini's goal was not enough for the Huskies, who dropped to 5-2-1 on the season.
The first half played out scoreless, with neither team carving out too many chances. Keeper
Oliver Blum, making his sixth start of the season, was rarely troubled in the opening 45 minutes thanks in part to the play of his defense.
Ambry Moss and
Conner Alexander, making their eighth start together in the center of defense, continued their strong defensive play, preventing any real scoring chances from materializing.
In the second half, Northeastern wasted no time in attacking, with
Mike Kennedy's shot being saved by Crusader keeper Michael Thompson shortly after the restart. Minutes letter Kennedy had another look at goal but skied his effort over the crossbar.
Soon after, the Huskies were in front. Marini scored to put Northeastern ahead, dribbling down the left side and putting a shot into the far side netting. The tally, which was Marini's third of the year, came unassisted as he continues his stellar play this year.
The advantage didn't last long however. With less than 25 minutes left in the game, Monty Sanders took a pass from Josh Cintas and slotted the ball past Blum for his second goal of the year.
Northeastern applied relentless pressure as the 90 minutes ticked to their conclusion, with corner kick after corner kick being turned away by the Holy Cross defense.
With the score tied at full time, the teams headed to overtime, the Huskies third overtime game of the season.
In the extra frame,
Ricardo McDonald had a chance to score the game-winner, but his headed effort was high and wide.
The first overtime ended scoreless, and into double overtime the two teams went, with Blum being forced into a save early in the second extra frame.
Roughly six minutes before the end of overtime, Kevin O'Connell's first goal of the season following a mad scramble in the box brought the game to a close, giving Holy Cross its first win of the season.
Northeastern is in action again this Saturday at 8 p.m. when the Huskies tackle the James Madison Dukes. That game will take place in Harrisonburg, Va.
