BOSTON – The Northeastern swimming and diving team opened up its 2012-13 season, but dropped a 165-135 decision to New Hampshire in the process. The Huskies won five events on the day, but a strong finish allowed the Wildcats to escape Barletta Natatorium with the victory.
NU opened up the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay with a win with a 1:48.38 time from the quartet of
Anna Schegoleva,
Julia Alvarez,
Erica DeMunbrun and
Nicole Colucci. UNH took the next two events -- the 1000 free and the 200 free -- but a one-two finish from Schegoleva (58.39) and
Dana Schleif (59.77) in the 100 backstroke gave the Huskies a nice lead heading into the middle of the meet. NU then took another one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke when Alvarez and
Keary McClernan finished with a 1:04.95 and 1:06.40 time, respectively.
After allowing the Wildcats to take the first two spots in the 200 butterfly,
Kelley Becherer earned back some points with her second-place finish in the 50 free, with a 25.43 time. Transitioning into the diving portion,
Candace Young showed up nicely with a combined one-meter dive score of 246.00 for a first-place finish and nine points on the board for NU.
UNH took the 100 freestyle race, with NU's
Megan Foran finishing in a close second with her time of 54.11, but Schegoleva took her third win of the afternoon with a quick 2:04.08 time in the 200 backstroke. UNH won the meet's next three events, the 200 breaststroke, the 500 free and the 100 butterfly, but once again, Young captured a first-place finish in the diving portion, this time on the three-meter board with a combined 246.67.
The Wildcats, though would take the final two events, the 200 IM and the 400 freestyle relay, securing the 165-135 win over the Huskies. Northeastern (0-1) will return to the pool in the CAA Pod Meet in Norfolk, Va., on Nov. 2 and 3. The Huskies will face Old Dominion, Towson and George Mason in the pool over the two-day period.
