BOSTON – Northeastern swimming and diving is ready to lift the lid on its 2012-13 season after a promising showing in the Red vs. Black event on Saturday in Barletta Natatorium. The Huskies, featuring a strong cast of 25 swimmers and divers, open up the regular season against a tough University of New Hampshire squad on Oct. 27 at noon in Barletta Natatorium.
The Huskies have a fair amount of momentum heading into the new season, on the heels of one of the more successful years in recent NU history in the pool. Head coach
Roy Coates' company set a wholly impressive 15 school records -- 11 of which came in the
2012 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships, where the Huskies finished sixth, a solid improvement from the year before. The Huskies concluded the year with a 9-4 record, including a 4-2 mark in CAA meets.
NU swimmers and divers come into this season with some individual momentum as well. Towards the end of 2011-12 and into the summer months, a few Huskies made a splash on the international scene.
Anna Schegoleva set Cyprus' national record in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:21.45 on June 23 at the Cyprus National Championship in Limassol, Cyprus. The Larnaca, Cyprus, native was named NU's Rookie of the Year by Coates just following the season's conclusion.
Two swimmers,
Kelley Becherer and
Keary McClernan,
were both called to Team USA trials over the summer. McClearnen was given an opportunity to compete in the NSSC Specialty Meet, following a 2011-12 campaign at Northeastern that saw her post NU's top times in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:03.79) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:16.39, a school record).
With two Paralympic Games already under her belt, Becherer was ready for a third showing, and certainly did not disappoint. The Northeastern senior
collected a remarkable two golds and two bronze in four events while in London for the 2012 Paralympic Games, smashing two American records in the process. Becherer earned her gold medals in both the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle, and picked up two bronze medals in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter individual medley, respectively. Following her
success in London, President Barack Obama welcomed Becherer,
along with the rest of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams, for a visit
to the White House in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 14.
