CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Northeastern swimming and diving tested its mettle this weekend, battling some of the nations' top programs in the pool, including host North Carolina, the U.S. Naval Academy and this year's Nike Cup winners, North Carolina State. The Huskies fared well, thanks to a few top-5 finishes, claiming 325 total points for a sixth place performance. CAA foe Old Dominion grabbed just 59 more points than NU for a fifth place finish, while James Madison ended its weekend just behind the Huskies in seventh with 65 total points.
NC State won the Cup with 933 points, followed by UNC with 816, East Carolina with 676.5 and Navy with 666.5 points. Duke rounded out the eight teams with 44 points over the three days.
Throughout the three-day affair, Northeastern performed well in each events' prelims, but nearly every Husky in the pool beat their preliminary time in the finals, making consistent strides of improvement in their lanes.
Day One kept NU on its toes, but the Huskies put together some fast times.
Anna Schegoleva,
Amanda Liew,
Jessica Colucci and
Kelley Becherer took ninth place in the weekend's first event, the 200 freestyle relay, swimming a 1:38.44 clip. After
Adriana Sepulveda put together a ninth-place finish in the 500 freestyle, Schegoleva put together the best finish for Northeastern of the first day. The sophomore swam a 2:04.13 clip in the finals for third place. Teammate
Julia Sepulveda was a half-second behind with a 2:04.63 pace for a stellar fourth place effort.
The 400 medley relay was the final event of the first day, and Schegoleva,
Julia Alvarez, Alli Gielowski and A. Sepulveda captured seventh place with their 3:51.05 collective time.
Day Two showed much promise for Northeastern, as the Huskies recorded seven top-10 efforts, including four in the top-5. After Schegoleva, Alvarez, Gielowski and Becherer competed well to earn a sixth place, 1:46.46, finish in the 200 medley relay, J. Sepulveda followed her fine Day One performance up with a tremendous 400 IM heat. The junior finished the 400 finals a full five seconds faster than her preliminary race for a second-place performance. Schegoleva earned two top-10 finishes, one each in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly (fifth and sixth, respectively). Alvarez posted her best conclusion of the weekend, swimming a brisk 1:03.25 in the 100 breaststroke to claim second.
The Huskies ended the second day on a positive note with a fifth place spot in the 800 freestyle relay. Schegoleva,
Megan Foran, and both the Sepulveda's put together a 7:35.08 run for the top-5 time.
Colleen McCormack started Day Three off for Northeastern with a 12th place effort in the taxing 1650 freestyle race, completing it in 17:29.75.
Jenny Doolin followed just behind with her 17:34.94 time in 16th.
Schegoleva claimed yet another top-5 spot, this time in the 200 backstroke, swimming a 2:01.46 clip for a fourth-place finish. Senior
Keary McClernan showed her fortitude in the 200 breaststroke, claiming second with her speedy 2:18.06 clip. The weekend ended with the 400 freestyle relay and another Husky top-10 finish. Schegoleva, J. Colucci, Becherer and A. Sepulveda claimed eighth place with their 3:31.26 time.
Following the lengthy Nike Cup, the Huskies will return to the pool to host UMass at 12 p.m. on December 1 in Barletta Natatorium.
