Swimming and diving finishes sixth at CAAs

The Northeastern swimming and diving team earned a sixth-place finish at the 2012 CAA Swimming and Diving Championship, which conclude Saturday in Fairfax, Va. The Huskies accumulated 276 team points during the four-day event hosted by George Mason University.

In the final day of competition, Northeastern swimmers set three new school records and posted seven season-best times. In the morning preliminaries, Anna Schegoleva set a new Northeastern standard in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:00.10. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Keary McClernan finished in 2:17.64 to set a new school record. McClernan later broke her own record with a time of 2:16.39 in the championship final.

Over the course of the four-day championship, Northeastern set 11 school records and recorded 20 season-best event times.

James Madison won the team title by collecting 771 points, followed by Towson (625), UNCW (494) and William & Mary (476.5). Old Dominion was fifth (327.5) and Northeastern was sixth (276). George Mason (253), Delaware (238) and Drexel (134) rounded out the nine-team field.

In the day's finals, Jill Shields finished 21st in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:29.29. Jenny Doolin finished just behind Shields in 22nd at 17:30.56.

Anna Schegoleva finished eighth in the championship final of the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 2:01.73. Dana Schleif finished 14th at 2:04.35.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Keary McClernan posted a time of 2:16.39 to break the school record that she had set earlier in the day during the preliminaries. The time earned her a fifth-place finish. Julia Alvarez finished 12th with a time of 2:21.11.

Jill Kearns improved on the season-best time she posted in the prelims by clocking in at 2:01.23 in the championship final of the 200-yard butterfly. Kearns finished in fifth place, while teammate Julia Sepulveda was 13th at 2:03.40.

In the final event of the championship meet, Northeastern finished eighth in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Julia Sepulveda, Chelsea Lim, Kelley Becherer and Adriana Sepulveda completed the event with a season-best time of 3:29.69.

In the morning preliminaries, Anna Schegoleva set the tone for the Huskies, establishing a new Northeastern record in the 200-yard backstroke. Schegoleva finished fifth with a time of 2:00.10. Dana Schleif finished 16th at 2:03.80 and Cassandra Cesaro was 18th at 2:03.86.

Adriana Sepulveda swam to a season-best time of 52.57 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish 23rd. Megan Foran (52.94, 28th) and Kelley Becherer (52.98, 29th) joined Sepulveda with sub-53-second times. Nicole Colucci finished 30th at 53.02, while Chelsea Lim (53.38) was 33rd, Alli Gielowski (53.84) was 34th, and Jessica Colucci (54.26) was 39th.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Keary McClernan set a school record by touching the wall in 2:17.64 to finish seventh. She later improved on that time in the event finals. Teammate Julia Alvarez finished 16th at 2:23.91.

Jill Kearns finished the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 2:01.68 to finish fifth. Julia Sepulveda finished 12th with a time of 2:03.70 and Erica DeMunbrun was 21st at 2:06.43.

The Huskies' sixth-place finish in the conference championship meet was its highest since finishing fifth in 2008.

Northeastern finished the season with a 9-4 (4-2 CAA) mark. Two Northeastern swimmers collected NCAA "B" cut times, as teammates Julia Sepulveda and Jill Kearns did so in the 400-yard IM. Northeastern divers Rachael Peterson and Candace Young, earlier in the year, qualified to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Zone A Diving Meet, to be held March 9-11 in Buffalo, N.Y.
