Five Northeastern greats have been elected to the Northeastern University Varsity Club Hall of Fame for excellence in their respective sports. Arthur Allen, Jim Fahey, Chanda Gunn,
Cheryl Murtagh and Mark Salisbury will be inducted in formal ceremonies at Northeastern's Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass., on Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m.
This year's class, which spans five athletic programs, have collectively rewritten the record books of their respective programs. The four athletes in this year's class have combined to set ten individual school records and earn 23 varsity letters during their time on Huntington Avenue. The lone coach among the honorees has brought Northeastern 10 conference titles and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Arthur Allen, of Schenectady, New York, sprinted at Northeastern from 1982-85 and is considered one of the great dash men in Northeastern history. As a 55-, 100- and 200-meter specialist, Allen broke school records in all three events en route to multiple championships in the New England Indoor, New England Outdoor, and IC4A Championships. His 55-meter dash time of 6.32 seconds and his 200-meter record of 20.94 seconds remain Northeastern records to this day.
Jim Fahey, of Milton, Mass., was a two-year captain of the men's ice hockey team team. Earning his letters from 1999-2002, Fahey starred along the Northeastern blue line, and as a senior in 2002 set the school record for points by a defenseman with 46. His efforts that year made him the second of Northeastern's three Hobey Baker Award finalists.
Chanda Gunn, of Huntington Beach, Calif., is an Olympic bronze medalist who starred in goal for Northeastern women's ice hockey from 2001-04. She graduated Northeastern with records in single-season and career save percentage, career saves and single-season wins. As a senior captain in 2004, Gunn became the second of Northeastern's three Patty Kazmaier Award finalists.
Cheryl Murtagh, of Salem, Mass., is the only coach in this year's class. A three-sport star in field hockey, basketball and softball at the University of New Hampshire, Murtagh brought experience with the US National Field Hockey Team in taking over the Northeastern field hockey program in 1988. 15 NCAA Tournament appearances and 10 America East Conference Championships later, Murtagh has compiled 333 career wins and will enter her 25th season at the helm this fall. With Hilary Witt and
Mike Glavine, both of whom played at Northeastern Murtagh is the third current NU coach to join the Hall of Fame.
Mark Salisbury, of Hallowell, Maine, by way of Cheshire, Conn., was a three-time All-New England First Team selection as a playmaking safety in Northeastern football's defensive backfield from 1990-93. Originally recruited as a wishbone quarterback, Salisbury left Northeastern with the fourth-most interceptions in program history, and also spent his springs at Parsons Field as a three-year letterman with the baseball team.
This year's five comprise the 37th class since the Varsity Club Hall of Fame was established in 1974. The honorees join the Hall of Fame's 228 other inductees in recognition of their contributions to Northeastern, its athletics programs, and the Husky community both during and after their time on Huntington Avenue. Also among the evening's festivities will be a celebration of Northeastern's senior student-athletes.
Tickets to the event are still available for $50 per person, and $400 to reserve an eight-person table. To reserve your ticket, please visit
