A pair of Northeastern University swimmers will take their talents to the International level in the coming weeks.
Kelley Becherer will compete in the 2012 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials on June 14-16th in Bismarck, N.D., while
Keary McClernan will head to the NSSC Specialty Meet June 17-19th for a chance to reach 2012 Olympic trials.
Becherer, who already has a decorated International career, will be swimming in four different events in Bismarck. They are the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, the 100-meter breast stroke and the 200-meter individual medley. A top-four finish in any of these events will earn the Sheboygan, Wisc.-native a spot on the United States 2012 Paralympic Swimming Team that will compete at the Olympic Games in London this August.
Becherer's last International experience was a successful one, as she picked up a first-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2011 Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships last August in Edmonton, Canada. Becherer's time of 27.84 set a new American record in the S13 division (swimmers with a visual disability.) Prior to Canada, The rising senior earned gold in the 50-meter freestyle and bronze in both the 100-meter freestyle S13 and 400-meter freestyle S13 at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.
McClernan's call to the NSSC Specialty Meet comes after a 2011-12 campaign at Northeastern that saw her post NU's top times in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:03.79) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:16.39, a school record). McClernan needs only to post a time of 2:35.99 or better to reach the 2012 Olympic Trials, held in Omaha, Neb. on June 25-July 2.
The Northeastern swimming and diving team finished 9-4 in the 2011-12 season, including a 4-2 mark in CAA meets.
