PHILADELPHIA –
In its first meet of the new year, the Northeastern swimming and diving team put together a fine showing against two CAA foes on the road Saturday, racing past host Drexel, 206-94, but just being edged by Delaware, 151-149. Collectively, the Huskies put together one of the better showings of the year, earning six individual wins between the lanes, including two from sophomore Anna Schegoleva.

Things started off well for NU with the day's first event, the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Schegoleva, junior Julia Alvarez, sophomore Erica DeMunbrun and senior Kelley Becherer finished with a second place finish with a 1:48.28, merely a half-second off of Delaware. Just two seconds later, Dana Schleif, Deirdre Esposito, Alli Gielowski and Chelsea Lim grabbed a fourth place finish.

In the 200 free, sophomore Megan Foran grabbed NU's first win of the day, swimming a 1:54.63, just .27 seconds in front of junior Julia Sepulveda in second place. Adriana Sepulveda finished in fourth, followed by Jessica Colucci in seventh. The next event for the Huskies proved to be as successful as the previous. Schegoleva grabbed her first win of the afternoon, swimming a blistering 57.69 in the 100 backstroke. Allison Walker (1:00.99), Schleif (1:01.27) and Nicole Colucci (1:02.30) finished in seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

The favorable outcomes continued for the Red and Black with the 100 breaststroke, thanks to a top-3 sweep from Alvarez (1:05.85), Keary McClernan (1:07.37) and Deirdre Esposito (1:07.71). It was a season-best in the pool for both McClernan and Esposito, each by more than a second. With great momentum, NU grabbed more team points with a great showing in the 200 butterfly from Gielowski and DeMunbrun. Gielowski's 2:07.71, second-place finish and DeMunbrun's 2:07.94, third-place finish.

In the 100 free, NU's best time came from Becherer with a 53.64 -- nearly a season best for the senior -- fourth-place finish in a tight battle. Becherer finished less than a second behind first place in the event. Schegoleva kept the Huskies in command in the 200 backstroke with a 2:05.77 clip. Senior co-captain Cassandra Cesaro (2:11.44) claimed fourth, Schleif (2:12.17) and freshman Sophie Browne (2:14.72) finished in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Once again, Northeastern earned back-to-back wins, this time thanks to McClernan's 2:24.61 in the 200 breaststroke. Alvarez finished close behind in second with a 2:26.45. Freshman Taylor Brew also got into the action, clocking a 2:30.61 for a fifth place finish. Not long after, Foran collected more points for NU with a second place finish in the lengthy 500 free. Her 5:07.25 was just two seconds off her season-best time.

Gielowski finally earned herself a win on the day, clocking a 58.46 in the 100 butterfly. DeMunbrun kept up her pace, finishing with a 58.67, third-place time. Things kept rolling for NU, this time in the 200 IM. Schegoleva earned the Huskies more points, swimming an impressive 2:11.33 clip for second place. Northeastern wrapped up another second-place finish, this time in the 400 free relay, as Foran, A. Sepulveda, Becherer and J. Sepulveda swam a 3:35.32 heat in the final swimming event of the afternoon.

With just the diving portion remaining, NU earned two third-place finishes from junior Candace Young, scoring a 230.30 in the 1-meter and a 235.00 in the 3-meter, wrapping up a successful afternoon for the Huskies.

Northeastern returns to the pool in a week's time when Vermont visits Huntington Ave. for a 12 p.m. dual in Barletta Natatorium.
