WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. –
Following a strong performance in the pool on Day 1 of the Dartmouth Invitational, the Northeastern swimming and diving team kept up early momentum and was able to seize third place overall thanks to four individual first-place finishes -- including two more pool records set by Anna Schegoleva. The Huskies finished with a team total of 706.50, just behind host Dartmouth in first and Boston University in second.

Schegoleva's pool records on Day 2 came in victories, in the 100 (57.12) and 200 backstroke (2:03.31), marking the fifth time this season the sophomore has swept both events in exciting fashion. Junior Julia Alvarez added yet another win in the 100 breaststroke for her resume, after swimming a quick 1:04.91. Senior Keary McClernan placed first in her specialty, the 200 breaststroke (2:22.95), giving the Huskies a tremendous boost.

From yesterday, the Huskies picked up where they left off, behind a a second-place finish from junior Julia Sepulveda in the second day's first event, the 400 IM (4:34.43). Freshman Sophie Browne finished close behind in fourth with a 4:34.43 time, which comes in at a season best for her.

The quick 100 fly followed with Alli Gielowski and Erica DeMunbrun picking up favorable fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively. Senior captain Cassandra Cesaro was the other Husky on the race and picked up a 17th-place finish.

Sophomore Megan Foran took 10th in the 200 free, swimming a 1:56.18 for NU, just ahead of senior Kelley Becherer's 1:56.77, 12th-place finish. Northeastern really leaped forward with Alvarez's winning 100 breaststroke event, as McClernan and sophomore Deirdre Esposito placed third and fourth, respectively, while freshmen Amanda Liew and Taylor Brew took ninth and 10th, respectively, giving the Red and Black five finishers in the top-10 in the event.

Schegoleva's second pool record performance followed, by way of the 100 backstroke. Cesaro finished in sixth, but was far less than a second away from a third place finish. Seniors Allison Walker (10th - 1:01.33) and Nicole Colucci (1:02.71) added more depth to NU's quest for a top spot.

Jenny Doolin added yet another top-5 performance for the Huskies in the difficult and lengthy 1650 free. The junior swam a 17:48.22 for a fifth place finish. Colleen McCormack posted a 17:57.70 in the same event to finish in eighth.

Schegoleva then gave the Huskies another push with her third pool record of the Invitational, this time in the 200 backstroke. Her 2:03.31 time beat the Upper Valley Aquatic Center's time by .09 of a second. Browne finished in sixth (2:08.37) and Cesaro took ninth (2:10.36).

When the 100 freestyle came around, Becherer, sophomore Jessica Colucci, Foran and Liew finished in a close race, almost consecutively, just outside the top-5. But Keary McClernan (2:22.95) and Alvarez (2:23.52) gave NU a one-two finish in the 200 breaststroke, giving the Huskies a much needed boost.

On the diving boards, both Candace Young and DeAnna Vecchiarello faired well in the 1-meter dive, earning a 203.80 and 155.55, respectively.

Alli Gielowski took another second-place finish for the Huskies, this time in the 200 fly, pacing the field with a 2:06.42 clip. J. Sepulveda (2:09.01), DeMunbrun (2:09.97) and Adriana Sepulveda (2:13.02) finished the 200 fly in eighth, 10th and 12th, respectively for Northeastern in the second-to-last swimming event.

In the Invitational's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, Becherer, Foran, J. Colucci and J. Sepulveda claimed third with a 3:35.79, securing NU's third-place finish.

The Huskies will close out the regular season next weekend with a trip down Interstate 95 to the University of Rhode Island for a dual meet with the Rams. Following that, NU will have two weeks off until the CAA Championships in Fairfax, Va.
