Six shots on goal for the Huskies and six saves by
Dylan Faber were not enough to help the Huskies overcome an early goal by William & Mary, as they fell 1-0 to the Tribe in Williamsburg, Va. Northeastern suffered its first loss of the season to a CAA opponent, giving them a 3-1-1 record in the conference and a 6-5-3 overall mark.
The Tribe got off to a quick start when Ryan Flesch scored his first goal of the season just 46 seconds into the match, ending Faber's shutout streak at 377:39. Flesch picked up a pass from Jackson Eskay and fired it into the lower right corner of the Husky goal.
Northeastern was quick to fire back, with a blocked shot from
Terence Carter and another wide by
Dante Marini in the succeeding minute.
The offense hit a lull for both teams until each side saw chances in the 14th and 15th minutes. NU got its first shot on goal from Marini, saved by Phillips. In the same minute, action made its way back in the other direction forcing Faber to make his first stop of the night on William & Mary's leading scorer Chris Albiston. Shortly thereafter, Chris Perez booted a corner kick wide of the goal for the Tribe.
Faber would make his second save of the night on Roshan Patel just over 21 minutes in, before the goal-scorer Flesch was assessed a yellow card for the Tribe. William & Mary would be assessed two more yellow cards on Perez and Marcus Luster two seconds apart from each other in the 34th minute.
Not long after, the Huskies would get a few chances beginning with a corner taken by
Marc Greenblatt. 30 seconds later,
Conner Alexander fired one over the crossbar, before
Jorge Acosta had a shot blocked.
The Tribe would get the final opportunities of the half, with a blocked shot attempt by Albiston and a corner from Flesch, and held their 1-0 advantage going into the breather.
Faber was tested early in the second half, making two saves in as many minutes on Perez and Eskay, before Carter would have a shot saved by Phillips at the other end of the pitch. The first Faber save also resulted in a corner kick for the shooter Perez.
Northeastern's
Jonathan Eckford would be assessed a yellow card in the 52nd minute shortly after Patel sailed one over the goal for William & Mary. Carter got off another shot that was stopped by Phillips before Faber would have to make another save on Eskay in the 60th minute.
Action went back-and-forth for a number of minutes as Phillips made stops on
Simon Cox and
Conner Alexander, with a save by Faber on Perez in between.
Alexander was assessed a yellow card in the 75th minute. Marini had a couple of chances for NU in the moments following, shooting one high before having a second shot saved by the Tribe goalkeeper.
In the 80th minute, Alexander was assessed his second yellow card, and got an automatic red card and ejection from the game.
The Huskies put together a few scoring chances in the final ten minutes looking for the equalizer, but ultimately came up short, falling 1-0 to the Tribe. In a span of one minute, the Huskies got two corner attempts from Schallmo and shots from Lara and Eckford that were blocked by the Tribe defense.
The Huskies will look to rebound against Hartford on Tuesday, Oct. 22, as they host the Hawks at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.
