BURLINGTON, Vt. – With the score tied at one through 40 minutes of play, Vermont scored twice in the first two minutes of the third period and held off a late NU rally to skate to a 3-1 victory against the Northeastern women's ice hockey team (6-9-1, 3-4-1) on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Katie MacSorley and
Melissa Haganey both scored for the Huskies, while
Chloe Desjardins made 32 saves in goal. Roxanne Douville got the nod in goal for the Catamounts, making 25 saves as UVM outshot NU 35-27 in the game. The Huskies were 0-of-3 on the power play while the Catamounts went 1-of-2.
Vermont would hold a 13-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening period, but it was the Huskies who drew first blood less than seven minutes into the contest. MacSorley would net her third goal of the weekend with 13:14 to play in the period when she received a pass from
Maggie Brennolt and fired a shot past Douville for the score.
The Catamounts would strike back five minutes later to level the score at one apiece as Danielle Rancourt notched her first goal of the season when she collected a pass from Danya Colang and sent a shot through Desjardins to make it 1-1.
Vermont would continue to hold the upper hand in the shots department into the second period, tossing another 13 bids on goal, but Desjardins stood tall to turn them all aside, including several attempts during two UVM power plays in the middle frame.
Entering the third period with 1:59 remaining on an earlier power play, the Catamounts took their first lead of the afternoon when Amanda Pelkey blasted a shot past Desjardins off a feed from Brittany Zuback for a 2-1 UVM lead. Less than a minute later, Rancourt added her second goal of the game, beating Desjardins off a dish from Kellie Dineed to make it 3-1 Vermont with 18:43 remaining in regulation.
Haganey would cut into the deficit near the midway mark of the third period when
Heather Mottau hit her with a pass in the offensive zone before Haganey beat Douville for her first collegiate goal with 10:50 left in regulation.
The Huskies will be back in action next weekend when Northeastern travels to Hanover, N.H. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Dartmouth on Friday night.
