BOSTON—Fifty years ago, the Northeastern University football team entered the first week of November with a 7-0 record and one game to go. The opponent was Tufts, with the nickname Jumbos.
To stir up some publicity, sports information director
Jack Grinold took captain and All-America tackle Joe Davis out to the Franklin Park Zoo for a visit with a real jumbo. While Davis very tentatively took the elephant's tail, Grinold fed the elephant donuts.
The Huskies won the game, 34-0, for its only undefeated, untied season. The team will hold a reunion later this month, on Nov. 16.
