FAIRFAX, Va. –
After a fast Day 1 in the pool for the 2013 CAA Championships, Northeastern earned 65 team points through three events, good enough for sixth place heading into Day 2. On the way to a successful day, the Huskies broke a five-year-old school record in the 200 medley relay, and nearly broke another in the 800 freestyle relay.

In the morning session, NU divers Candace Young and Megan Rutter faired well on the boards. Young grabbed 245.75 points for fifth place in the prelims, while Rutter made the consolation round later in the day with her preliminary score of 208.75. Young's 249.75 final round score earned the junior sixth place on the day, and Rutter, making her first appearance as a freshman, finished in 13th with a 208.45.

Between the lanes, the Huskies lit up the stopwatch. In the first event of Session 2, sophomore Anna Schegoleva, junior Julia Alvarez, sophomore Erica DeMunbrun and senior Kelley Becherer swam a blistering 1:43.84, beating their old season-best mark by nearly three seconds and flatlining the school record (set in the 2008 CAA Championships by Alexandra Doty, Heather Whiting, Kara Lane and Kathrine Fugge) by over a second. The quartet's time was good enough for sixth place in race which saw the pool record come tumbling down by James Madison in first place.

In the day's final event, four NU swimmers nearly combined to take down yet another school record, this time in the 800 free relays. Schegoleva, sophomore Megan Foran and juniors Adriana Sepulveda and Julia Sepulveda swam a speedy 7:29.21 for sixth place in the event. The foursome were shy the NU record -- set last season in the CAA Championships -- by under a second.

Northeastern looks to build on a solid Day 1 with two sessions tomorrow, which feature the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 free relays. Sesson 3 (prelims) begins in the morning at 10 a.m., while Session 4 (finals) is set for a 6 p.m. debut. Fans are encouraged to click here to follow along with the live results as they arrive.
