Day 1 Recap
FAIRFAX, Va. – Northeastern jumped up to fifth place on Day 3 of the CAA Championships, thanks to two more broken school records and a bevy of top-10 finishes. The Huskies have now totaled 209 team points.
Julia Sepulveda started things off for NU on Friday, reaching the podium after swimming a third-place earning 4:20.98 in the 400 IM. The time, just two seconds off her own school record, was a season-best for Sepulveda, by a mere .09 of a second.
Erica DeMunbrun and Alli Gielowski finished back-to-back in the consolation finals of the 100 butterfly, earning nine team points for Northeastern in the process. Both swimmers beat their previous 2012-13 bests, DeMunbrun with her 56.44 and Gielowski with her 56.61.
Megan Foran followed in the next event, the 200 freestyle, with a 16th-place finish in 1:53.78, which helped move Northeastern up to fifth place in the overall standings.
The Huskies then had two finishers in the top-eight of the 100 breaststroke, as
Julia Alvarez and senior
Keary McClernan finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the championship finals. Alvarez matched her school-record breaking prelims time of 1:02.77, while McClernan finished the event in 1:03.37. Alvarez smashed her own event record set nearly three years ago in the 2010 Terrier Invitational.
Anna Schegoleva broke her third school record in three days in the following event. In the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke, Schegoleva swam a blazing 55.91 clip, besting the old NU record by almost a half a second. The sophomore pulled a sixth-place finish in the championship finals, swimming the event in 55.95, good enough for 13 team points.
On the boards, junior
Candace Young put herself into the championship round on the 1-meter dive with her score of 232.70 in the prelims. Young placed eighth, earning 11 points, after scoring a 218.75. Freshman
Megan Rutter had a drastically improved score in the consolation finals on the 1-meter. Rutter scored a 189.55 in the prelims, and vaulted her score to 204.30, which was good enough for 14th.
In the day's last event for Northeastern, the Huskies' quartet of Schegoleva, Alvarez, DeMunbrun and Foran took seventh place (3:48.82), earning 24 points in the 400 medley relay. The time was the fastest the four Huskies swam together this season.
Northeastern returns to the pool with great momentum heading into the final Day 4 of the CAA Championships tomorrow (Saturday). The busy day's slate will feature the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relays.
