FAIRFAX, Va. – Northeastern found a way to improve its spot in the CAA Championships for the third consecutive year, finishing in fifth place in the 2013 CAA Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday. The Huskies broke a total of six school records over the four-day event, including two on Day 4 to help maintain the top-5 team finish (287 points).
Following the morning prelims, Session 8 featured the taxing 1650 freestyle. NU's
Colleen McCormack swam quickly, just shy of her own school record, and finished in 17th in 17:06.74, which smashed her season-best time by more than 23 seconds.
Jenny Doolin also set a season-best, swimming the lengthy event in 17:26.76, 12 seconds better than her performance in the Nike Cup earlier in the season.
After swimming a near-Northeastern record time of 2:00.64 to earn a spot in the 200 backstroke championship finals, sophomore
Anna Schegoleva grabbed 12 team points for the Huskies, finishing in seventh place with a time of 2:01.53. Shortly after,
Kelley Becherer, who made her way to the consolation finals of the 100 freestyle, placed 15th with a 52.14. The senior's time in the prelims (51.75) set a new American Paralympic record, her second of such during the 2013 CAA Championships.
The 200 breaststroke was another solid event for Northeastern, which qualified both senior
Keary McClernan and junior
Julia Alvarez. McClernan broke her own school record -- by more than two seconds -- swimming a blistering, NCAA 'B' cut of 2:14.10, which earned her a top-4 finish. Alvarez, who convincingly set a season-best time in her prelims (2:16.82), finished in seventh place with a time of 2:17.61. Together, the two Huskies grabbed 27 points for NU, which inched the squad closer to fourth place in the team standings.
In the next event, Northeastern again qualified two swimmers, this time Alli Gielowski and
Julia Sepulveda in the consolation finals of the 200 butterfly. Gielowski set a season-best time with her 2:02.99, 10th-place finish, and Sepulveda followed suit and bested her previous time with a 13th-place finish in 2:04.76.
In the Championships' final event, Northeastern broke yet another school record, thanks in part to the quick efforts of
Kelley Becherer,
Anna Schegoleva,
Jessica Colucci and
Julia Sepulveda. The four smashed a three-year old record in the 400 freestyle relay, swimming the event in 3:27.11 for 26 team points and a sixth-place finish.
In total, Northeastern earned 287 team points for the fifth-place finish. Towson University claimed the 2013 CAA Championship with 735.5 points. James Madison finished in a close second place (735.5), just ahead of William & Mary (496) and UNCW (359). Behind Northeastern, Delaware finished in sixth (221), in front of Drexel (212) and George Mason (208) to round out the field.
