2013-14 U.S. Women's National Team | Official Release | Highlights
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Northeastern women's ice hockey forward
Kendall Coyne came one step closer to her Olympic dream on Monday when the Palos Heights, Ill. native was named to the 2013-14 U.S. Women's National Team that will train and play games in preparation for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
"We had a tremendous camp with our country's best players and faced some very difficult decisions," said Reagan Carey, director of women's hockey for USA Hockey. "We thank everyone for their dedication and congratulate those that made the team."
Coyne spent last week as one of 41 players at the U.S. Women's National Team Selection Camp that will take place at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid. The camp consisted of daily practices, off-ice testing, and three intrasquad scrimmages, and was used to trim the roster down to 25 players.
After a brief break, the team will gather in Boston at the end of August for a long residency program before they embark on the Bring On The World Tour, with a number of games scheduled against Canada. The final 21-player U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team roster is expected to be announced in late December 2013.
Coyne has played in 63 career games with Team USA, tallying 40 goals and 33 assists. At the 2013 IIHF Women's World Championship in Ottawa, she was tied for third on the team with five points (one goal, two assists), including two helpers in the goal-medal game against Canada. Coyne was also third on the team with a +5 rating.
Coyne rewrote the Northeastern record book during the 2012-13 season, leading the Huskies with 68 points (37 goals, 31 assists) and becoming the first Husky since 1988 to record at least 65 points in a season en route to AHCA/CCM Second Team All-American honors. Coyne was also named a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award top-ten finalist on Feb. 28 and a Hockey East First Team All-Star on Mar. 8.
Coyne is the first Husky in 13 years to record at least 45 points in back-to-back seasons (Hillary Witt in 1998-99 and 1999-00), and is the first NU player since 2002 to post at least 25 goals in consecutive seasons (Brooke Whitney in 2000-01 and 2001-02). Coyne, along with Boston College's Alex Carpenter, shattered the league record for conference points in a season, previously held by Sadie Wright Ward in 2005-06.
