WORCESTER, Mass. – The Northeastern men's soccer team (3-3-2) received second half goals from Jonathan Eckford and Conner Alexander, along with a blank sheet from Dylan Faber and NU defense to lead the Huskies to a 2-0 win at Holy Cross on Tuesday night.

NU outshot the Crusaders 13-9 during the match, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Huskies also earned five corner chances to Holy Cross' two.

Midway through the first half, Northeastern earned its third corner of the night, resulting in one of the Huskies' best scoring opportunities of the contest. After Robbie Schallmo inserted the ball, Dante Marini collected the ball and fired a shot on goal that was blocked by a Crusader defender. Christian McKenna generated Northeastern's lone shot on goal in the half, coming with 20 minutes left, but Holy Cross goalkeeper Kevin Wright was there to make the stop.

The NU defense held Holy Cross to three shot attempts during the opening 45 minutes, including one on goal, but Faber was able to come up with the save on Ryan Gavey with 15 minutes to play in the first half.

Northeastern's defense continued its strong play into the second half, breaking up a potential Holy Cross scoring bid two minutes into the second off a long pass from midfield.

McKenna had a chance to put NU up 1-0 in the 53rd minute when he took a pass in the left of the box and ripped a shot that Wright got a hand on. Marini had an opportunity of his own eight minutes later when he fired a shot intended for the top left corner, but Wright was once again there to make the save. Marini would have another chance minutes later on a shot from the left side that Wright also got a hold on.

Marini continued to lead the Huskies as the half wore on, hammering another shot on goal in the 67th minute that Wright got his fingertips on to send over the crossbar. On the ensuring corner, the Huskies broke through. After Schallmo sent the ball into the box on the corner, Eckford found some space and knocked in his first goal of the season to give NU a 1-0 lead with 22:58 remaining in regulation.

The Northeastern defensive corps maintained its composure until the very end, limiting the Holy Cross chances, including a scrum in the middle of the box with less than 10 minutes left in regulation when NU cleared the ball out of danger.

The Huskies netted an insurance marker with 6:16 left in the second half when Alexander scored his first goal of the season when he collected a pass from Marc Greenblatt and sent home a shot into the right side for a 2-0 NU lead.

The Huskies will return home on Saturday when Northeastern hosts Stony Brook at 6 p.m. on Parsons Field.
