CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Northeastern women's swimming and diving team had a chance to throw some early-season times up on the board on Friday afternoon, competing in a dual-meet scrimmage against Harvard at the Crimson's Blodgett Pool.
Â
The Huskies won four out of 16 events overall, including one relay and three individual events.
Â
Freshman
Sara Touchette-McGowan placed first in both the 100 freestyle (52.46) and the 100 butterfly (56.35). Teammate
Rachel Green finished second in the 100 freestyle (53.56) behind Touchette-McGowan, and co-captain
Megan Foran finished fourth (55.19), giving Northeastern three out of the top four spots in the event.
Â
Team newcomers
Taylor Ellis and
Samira Hoesl kicked off the season with strong times in the 100 breaststroke. Ellis won the event with a time of 1:04.47, while Hoesl finished right behind her in second place with a time of 1:05.99. Harvard's Katie Evans was more than two seconds off the pace of the two new Husky swimmers, winding up in third.
Â
Northeastern also came away with the victory in the final event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay. Senior co-captain
Anna Schegoleva joined Green, Ellis, and Hoesl as members of the Huskies' A-squad that topped Harvard's B-squad by just 0.30 seconds. Northeastern-A was more than two seconds behind Harvard-B after 300 yards, but Green managed to turn on the jets in her final four laps, propelling the Huskies to a time of 3:35.61.
Â
Schegoleva was also Northeastern's top swimmer in both the 100 backstroke (58.32) and the 200 backstroke (2:05.95), finishing third and second, respectively.
Â
Sophomore
Jordan Domeier had a strong first outing of the season, collecting a time of 10:54.79 in the 1000 freestyle, good for second place behind Harvard's Regan Kology.
Â
The Crimson placed first and second in both diving events, but freshman
Caroline Gonsalves was just 0.22 points away from cracking into the top two in the 1-meter dive.
Â
Two-time Ivy League individual champion Danielle Lee helped guide Harvard to victory in the 200 medley relay, and defeated Northeastern's Ellis by less than a second to win the 500 freestyle event.
Â
The Huskies will have two more weeks to prepare for the 2014-15 season opener in a dual meet against New Hampshire at Barletta Natatorium. Northeastern looks to avenge a 167-128 loss they had suffered to the Wildcats last season on Oct. 26 in Durham, New Hampshire.
