ERIE, Pa. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team picked up its first win of the season in impressive fashion on Friday night with a 4-0 victory over No. 8/10 Mercyhurst at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Senior Chloe Desjardins picked up her eighth career shutout with 26 saves, while junior Kendall Coyne notched a goal and two assists to lead the Huskies (1-0-2) offensively. Northeastern turned in an excellent special teams effort as well, scoring a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal, while killing off all five Mercyhurst (3-1-1) power plays.

After a scoreless first period, the Huskies wasted little time going on the offensive in the second stanza. On a power play just 1:56 into the frame, freshman Lauren Kelly took a feed from freshman Ainsley MacMillan and rifled a slap-shot over the glove of Mercyhurst goaltender Amanda Makela (21 saves) from the left point to put the Huskies ahead.

Northeastern doubled the lead less than three minutes later. Senior Chelsiea Goll picked off a pass in the defensive zone and raced in alone on a breakaway. Goll's shot struck the right post, but the puck caromed into the slot to junior Paige Savage, who buried the rebound past a sprawling Makela to make it 2-0 just 4:48 into the period.

The Huskies struck again in the third period on MacMillan's first collegiate goal. Following some hard work in the offensive zone by freshman McKenna Brand, sophomore Hayley Scamurra and Coyne, the puck wound up at the right point on the stick of MacMillan. The freshman drifted to the middle before blasting a shot that deflected off a Mercyhurst defenseman and into the net to make it 3-0 at the 7:04 mark.

In the waning minutes, Mercyhurst was awarded a power play and elected to pull Makela to make it a 6-on-4 opportunity. Northeastern defended well, and eventually made it 4-0 when Coyne collected a loose puck and buried a shot into the open cage with 14 seconds to play. It was Coyne's sixth career shorthanded goal and ninth career empty net goal.

Desjardins was sharp throughout, stopping 11 shots in both the second and third periods to earn her 43rd career victory. The senior needs just five more wins to tie Kelly Dyer for the fourth-most victories (48) in program history.

The Huskies are back at it Saturday against Mercyhurst at 2 p.m.
