ERIE, Pa. -- The Northeastern women's hockey team battled back to erase two one-goal deficits in the third period, but could not hold off a late Mercyhurst charge as the No. 8/10 Lakers skated to a 4-2 win over the Huskies on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Freshmen Halle Silva and Lauren Kelly scored for Northeastern (1-1-2), while senior Chloe Desjardins made 28 saves. Mercyhurst netminder Amanda Makela stopped 21 pucks to help the Lakers salvage the weekend split and improve to 4-1-1.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead into the third courtesy of a second-period goal by Hannah Bale, before a wild, back-and-forth sequence produced four goals in a span of 4:20 midway through the final frame.

Silva knotted the game at 1-1 at the 10:53 mark, slipping home a shot in the crease after a feed from freshman Taytum Clairmont from behind the net. The freshmen each earned their first collegiate points on the play, while another freshman, Denisa Krizova, earned the secondary helper.

Mercyhurst answered 1:37 later on a goal by Shelby Bram to retake the lead at 2-1, but Northeastern responded within 40 seconds when Kelly ripped a shot through traffic from the left point to tie the game at 2-2 with 6:52 to play. The goal was Kelly's second of the weekend after netting the game-winner on Friday night. 

Despite battling back twice, the Huskies could not hold on to the momentum as the Lakers re-took the lead for good just 2:05 later. On a rush down the left wing, Jaclyn Arbour eluded a defender, then went forehand to backhand to beat Desjardins upstairs with 4:47 remaining.

The Huskies elected to pull Desjardins for the extra attacker in the final minute, but Emily Janiga had the final say with an empty net tally to make it 4-2 with just over 12 seconds left.

Northeastern will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to Robert Morris for a pair of games on Oct. 24-25 in Moon Township, Pennsylvania.
