Men's soccer begins CAA play with 1-0 win at Charleston

Fayd'Herbe de Maudave scored in the 74th minute to help lift NU past the Cougars
Box Score | Season Stats

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave scored in the 74th minute and the Northeastern men's soccer team (4-7-0, 1-0-0) received three saves from Jonathan Thuresson to walk away with a 1-0 win at the College of Charleston (2-6-1, 0-1-0) in the CAA opener on Saturday night.

Fayd'Herbe de Maudave broke the deadlock with less than 16 minutes to play when he chased down a pass from Christian McKenna and chipped the ball over CofC goalkeeper Alex Young (four saves) for the eventual game-winner.

The win gives Northeastern at least one point in each of its last seven conference openers (5-0-2), and is now 5-2-2 in CAA openers since joining the conference in 2005.

The Cougars outshot the Huskies 13-10 in the match, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Northeastern, meanwhile, earned six corner opportunities while holding Charleston to two.

While the Cougars outshot the Huskies 8-6 in the first half, neither squad generated significant scoring opportunities. Frantzdy Pierrot had a couple of bids for the Huskies, including a chance in the eighth minute when he redirected an entry pass from the left side, but Young got a hand on the ball.

Midway through the first half, the Cougars nearly took a 1-0 lead when Tanner Clay ripped a shot from 20 yards out that sailed just over the crossbar, intended for the top right corner.

Pierrot had another bid late in the first half as he slashed through the Charleston defense, including the goalkeeper, on his way towards goal, but a Cougar defended hustled back to get a foot on the Pierrot shot to keep the match scoreless.

Both squads had their chances in the second half, but it was the Huskies who carried the play for much of the final 45 minutes of regulation. NU kept the pressure on the Cougars for much of the second half, earning three corners to CofC's one.

Brad Fountain tried to put the Huskies on top in the 61st minute when he sent a cross into the box from the right side, and Nick Goo got a head on the ball only to see Young come up with the save.

It wasn't until the 74th minute when Northeastern broke through and received the go-ahead goal from Fayd'Herbe de Maudave. McKenna began the play with possession at midfield before sending the ball towards the left side of the box. Fayd'Herbe de Maudave then raced to catch up to the ball as Young charged out of the net in an attempt to swallow it up. Fayd'Herbe de Maudave, however, got there first and chipped the ball over the keeper and watched it trickle into the cage for his first goal of the year.

Charleston started to press with less than 15 minutes to play, and Troy Peterson almost netted the equalizer with 10:49 left, but Marc Greenblatt got a head on the shot to help out Thuresson.

Northeastern will return home on Wednesday when the Huskies host conference rival Drexel at 6 p.m. from Parsons Field.
