BOSTON -- Junior Kendall Coyne scored two goals to lift the Northeastern women's hockey team to a 5-1 win over the Oakville Hornets in exhibition play Saturday at Matthews Arena.

Freshman Ainsley MacMillan, senior Chelsiea Goll and freshman Denisa Krizova also scored for the Huskies, who outshot the Hornets by a 43-20 margin. Sophomore Sarah Foss started the game in net and stopped all seven shots she faced, before giving way to senior Chloe Desjardins  (12 saves on 13 shots) midway through the second period. 

Northeastern took the lead just 12 seconds into the game and never looked back. Just moments after the opening face-off, Coyne stole the puck along the right boards and cut hard to the net, before sliding a shot through the pads of Oakville netminder Daniela Paniccia to make it 1-0 Huskies.

The Palos Heights, Illinois, native struck again just over five minutes later to double the advantage. After some hard work on the forecheck, junior Paige Savage retrieved the puck behind the Hornets' net and slipped a feed into the goal-mouth for a cutting Coyne to one-time past Paniccia at the 5:17 mark of the opening period.

The Huskies then added a third on their 15th shot of the period when Krizova nudged a pass back to MacMillan at the point for a blast that found its way through traffic and into the cage with 21 ticks showing on the clock.

Northeastern picked up where it left off in the second stanza, making it 4-0 just 2:01 into the period. With heavy traffic in front of Paniccia, Goll was able to find the loose disc at the right of the cage and roof it over the outstretched pad of the Hornets' netminder.

Oakville cut into the deficit at the 14:55 mark of the second when Madison Field dropped a pass to Meaghan Hector for a shot from the right circle that glanced off a Northeastern defender and over the glove of Desjardins to make it 4-1.

After a penalty-free first two periods, the Huskies were whistled for two late infractions in the third. The numerical disadvantage did not deter the hosts, however, as Krizova netted a shorthanded tally after a nifty move on a breakaway with 1:53 to play.

The Huskies will now turn their attention to Syracuse for the regular season opener on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The contest will kick off an eight-game road swing to start the 2014-15 campaign.
