BOSTON -- Playing in its fifth game in nine days, the Northeastern women's hockey team (2-4-3, 1-2-0 WHEA) came up short on Saturday in a 1-0 loss to Maine in the regular season home opener at Matthews Arena.

Kristin Gilmour's goal 11:02 into the first period proved to be all Maine (4-5-2, 3-1-1 WHEA) would need as goaltender Mariah Fujimagari stopped all 20 Northeastern shots. Maine held a 29-20 shot advantage overall, including a 15-2 margin in the third period, en route to snapping a 13-game winless skid against Northeastern.

The game's only goal came on a point shot through traffic midway through the opening period. Brooke Stacey dug out a loose puck along the boards to Morgan Sakundiak at the top of the right circle. Sakundiak turned and dished a feed back to Gilmour at the left point for a blast that zipped through an Emilie Brigham screen and found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Black Bears.

Northeastern generated several quality chances in the second period, but could not solve Fujimagari. Just 11 seconds into the frame, freshman McKenna Brand raced in on a partial breakaway and unleashed a hard wrister from between the circles that Fujimagari snared under her arm. Then, midway through the period, Fujimagari stood her ground to make a blocker save on sophomore Hayley Scamurra in the low slot.

Sophomore Heather Mottau created a quality scoring chance midway through the third, but her wrister from between the circles caught the shoulder of Fujimagari and glanced off the left post to stay out.

Northeastern will look to regroup and rest with a week until its next game– Nov. 8 against Boston College at Matthews Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
