Season StatsPROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite outshooting Providence by a 43-20 margin, the Northeastern women's hockey team (3-6-3, 2-4-0 WHEA) dropped a 4-1 decision at the hands of the Friars on Saturday at Schneider Arena.
Sophomore
Hayley Scamurra scored for the second straight game, registering a power-play goal in the second period with assists from freshmen
Lauren Kelly and
Taytum Clairmont.
Allison Micheletti, Brittney Thunstrom, Cassidy Carels and Beth Hanrahan scored for Providence, which earned its first win of the season (1-9-3, 2-3-1 WHEA). Friars' netminder Allie Morse played a strong game in net with 42 saves.
The Friars opened the scoring on the power play late in the first period. From the low left slot, Micheletti tossed a pass in front of the cage that took a tough deflection off an NU skate and into the net with 1:25 showing on the clock.Â
Providence wasted little time extending its advantage in the second stanza. Just 25 seconds after the opening faceoff, Thunstrom stripped the puck from behind the NU net and wheeled into the slot on the backhand, before lifting a shot over the shoulder of
Chloe Desjardins (13 saves) to make it 2-0 Friars.Â
Scamurra got the Huskies back in the game with her third goal of the season at the 7:08 mark of the second period. With Madison Sansone in the box for elbowing, the Huskies worked the puck around the boards to Scamurra on the right wall. The sophomore stick-handled into the high slot, between the circles, before unleashing a hard wrister that slipped through the pads of Morse to make it 2-1.Â
Northeastern was unable to hold the momentum, however, as Providence responded just 1:51 later to retake a two-goal lead. On a breakaway, Carels fanned on her initial shot, but picked up her own rebound and stashed it by Desjardins to push the score to 3-1 with 11:01 left in the frame.
The hosts put the game away 3:39 into the third when Hanrahan scored off her own rebound following a 2-on-1 break. The goal prompted a goaltending switch as sophomore
Sarah Foss (three saves) came on for the final 15 minutes.
The Huskies will look to earn the weekend split on Sunday when they host Providence for a 2 p.m. contest at Matthews Arena.
