BOSTON -- The Northeastern women's hockey team (4-6-3, 3-4-0 WHEA) scored five goals in the second period and netted four power-play goals to help sophomore goaltender Sarah Foss earn her first collegiate victory in a 6-2 win over Providence on Sunday at Matthews Arena.

"It was great to get my first win today, but more importantly, I'm proud of my teammates for coming together and bringing the energy that they did," Foss said after the game. "Their support was the reason I felt confident today."

Foss stopped 19 of 21 shots and received an outpouring of offensive support as the Huskies netted six goals for the second time in the last three games. Junior Kendall Coyne (two goals, one assist) and sophomore Heather Mottau (three assists) each had three points, while Denisa Krizova, Hayley Scamurra and Jordan Krause notched two points apiece.

The Huskies outshot Providence (1-10-3, 1-3-1 WHEA) by a 43-21 margin and scored four power-play goals (4-for-5) for the first time since Oct. 8, 1999 when NU went 4-for-16 on the PP against Ohio State in a 6-0 win. The Huskies also netted five goals in a period for the first time since Nov. 3, 2012 in a 9-1 victory over Connecticut.

The Huskies got on the board first with a power-play goal from Coyne midway through the opening period. Freshman McKenna Brand worked the puck to Mottau between the circles. Mottau then dropped a nifty backhand feed to Coyne in the high slot for a hard wrister that zipped over the shoulder of Friars netminder Allie Morse (20 saves) to make it 1-0 NU at the 11:06 mark.

Providence evened the score just over seven minutes later. On an offensive-zone faceoff to the right of Foss, Haley Frade won the draw back to Cassidy Carels at the top of the circle. Carels unleashed a quick shot that took a deflection off an NU defenseman and found its way inside the right post to knot the score at one-apiece with 1:13 left in the frame. 

In the second period, Northeastern exploded for five goals on 14 shots to blow the game open. Coyne netted her second of the afternoon with a power-play goal at 2:01 with a shot from the right circle that squirted through the pads of Morse to make it 2-1.

The Huskies then scored three goals in a span of 2:08 to push the advantage to 5-1. On another power-play opportunity, Coyne worked the puck to Krause at the top of the offensive zone. Krause then ripped a shot that found its way through traffic and into the back of the cage to make it 3-1. 

Just 14 seconds later, Krizova bumped the advantage to 4-1 on an unbelievable individual play. After picking up a Scamurra pass in the defensive zone, Krizova skated through a pair of Providence defenders, before tucking a shot inside the right post while being hooked down to the ice. 

The hooking penalty was still assessed, and Northeastern made Providence pay yet again on the power play just 1:56 later. After exchanging passes with Scamurra along the left boards, freshman Taytum Clairmont threw the puck back to the point for classmate Lauren Kelly. The freshman picked her head up and unleashed a hard wrist-shot that clanged home off the right post to make it 5-1 Huskies at the 12:24 mark. The goal prompted a goaltending switch as Morse was replaced by backup Alanna Serviss (17 saves).

Northeastern was not finished yet. In the final minutes of the period, junior Tori Hickel won an offensive-zone faceoff back to sophomore Hayley Masters at the top of the right circle. Masters threw the puck toward the net, where Chelsey Goldberg was stationed to put away a rebound with 2:08 remaining in the period. 

Providence added the game's final goal with 0.5 seconds remaining in the third period. On a late power play, Brooke Boquist won a draw back to Liz Halvorson, who flipped a shot at the net. The puck fluttered off the left post and bounced in the crease, before Boquist was able to dive in and push it home for a late consolation.

Northeastern returns to action next weekend for a pair of home games against Vermont on Nov. 22-23.
