Full Release  |  Take The Pledge  |  Be An Ambassador

BOSTON – Peter Roby, Northeastern director of athletics and recreation, was named a Co-Chair for the 2015 Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign, sponsored by Jane Doe Inc. As part of an international human rights effort, the Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign invites men and boys to be part of the solution in ending violence against women.

Roby's goal, along with Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan, is to carry a message that how people imagine and value manhood and masculinity significantly impacts their ability to end and prevent violence against women.  On Wednesday, Roby, Sullivan, and members of the White Ribbon Day Honorary Committee gathered at the Jane Doe Inc. offices at 14 Beacon Street in Boston to launch the 8th Annual Massachusetts White Ribbon Day Campaign.

"I invite every man in Massachusetts to join me in being an Ambassador for the White Ribbon Day Campaign," Roby said. "My goal is to engage my sports colleagues in a coordinated effort to end this epidemic and make our community safe for everyone regardless of gender. By lending your voice and reaching out to the men and boys in your community, you will be part of the solution to end violence against women and making our community safer for everyone regardless of gender."

On the first Thursday in March, men throughout Massachusetts will speak out to change societal attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate and make excuses for violence against women, promote safety and respect in all relationships and situations, and build a network of resounding voices that will support and advance the initiatives and efforts of Jane Doe Inc. and its member organizations to promote the safety, liberty and dignity of survivors.

In the coming months, Roby and Sullivan will lead the White Ribbon Day Honorary Committee.  In collaboration with Jane Done Inc. and its affiliates, the Honorary Committee will partner with middle schools, high schools, professional and college sports teams, businesses, civic groups, and cities and towns around Massachusetts to hold White Ribbon Day events aimed at engaging boys and men of all ages.

Jane Doe Inc. invites men from all walks of life to become a White Ribbon Ambassador and add their voice in seeking solutions to end violence against women. The basic role of an Ambassador is to serve as an example to others by wearing the White Ribbon during the week of March 5th and especially on White Ribbon Day, March 5, 2015. An Ambassaor is also looked upon to recruit five or more friends and colleagues to wear the ribbon on that day, and to participate in local proclamation events and other activities to promote Massachusetts White Ribbon Day.
