BOSTON – Northeastern and Michigan State have agreed to a three-sport, home-and-home series in 2015-16, as announced Thursday by Northeastern Athletics.Â
The Huskies will host the Spartans in men's and women's basketball, as well as men's ice hockey on Dec. 18-19, 2015, before returning the games in East Lansing, Michigan, the following season.
"This is a very exciting opportunity for our athletic department," said
Peter Roby, director of athletics and recreation at Northeastern. "We are thrilled and appreciative of Athletics Director Mark Hollis and our friends at Michigan State for their willingness to bring their teams to Boston and help us create such a fun weekend. We have great respect and admiration for what MSU has accomplished and we look forward to next December."
"Creating unique memory-makers for student-athletes has been the benchmark of Spartan Athletics, especially when we can provide a cultural and historical learning experience," Hollis said. "In collaboration with
Peter Roby, we look forward to providing our student-athletes in men's basketball, women's basketball and ice hockey a rare opportunity to travel with each other and support their fellow student-athletes in Boston, one of our nation's outstanding and historical cities, while playing in Matthews Arena, the oldest multi-purpose athletic building still in use in the world and the original home of the Boston Bruins and a home for the Celtics."
The Northeastern and Michigan State women's basketball teams will open the series in Boston on Dec. 18, 2015. The following day, the Huskies and Spartans will play a men's basketball-men's hockey doubleheader at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern and Michigan State have never met before in men's or women's basketball. The men's program owns four all-time wins against current members of the Big Ten, with the last victory coming on Dec. 22, 2008 in a 55-42 triumph at Indiana. The Northeastern women's program has posted three wins over current Big Ten members, most recently defeating Maryland (then a member of the ACC), 46-42, on Nov. 30, 1984.Â
The Huskies have faced the Spartans five times before in men's hockey, with MSU holding a 3-2-0 edge in the series. The teams last met on Oct. 27, 1996 in a 6-5 Northeastern victory at Matthews Arena.
