Team points scoring (PDF) | Heats results (PDF) | Finals results (PDF) | Line-upsEditor's note: Due to a scoring miscalculation by race officials, an earlier report listed Northeastern as the team points champion. After a corrected count, Navy was awarded the team championship with Northeastern second.BOSTON — The Northeastern women's rowing team turned in a historic performance at the heralded Eastern Sprints on Sunday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Each of the Huskies' four crews medaled on the day in the program's best team performance in 34 appearances in the championship regatta. The third varsity eight capture gold to lead the NU effort.
"This was our strongest team performance at the Eastern Sprints in program history," head coach
Joe Wilhelm said on Sunday. "I couldn't be happier for our athletes who have worked extremely hard all year. Each crew came out of this race with a good idea of what we need to do to prepare for the CAA Championship in two weeks."
Northeastern collected 79 total points, just two behind Navy in the Willing Point Trophy team championship standings. Boston College was a distant third with 68 points, while Columbia was fourth.
In a dominating morning performance, each of the Northeastern crews placed first in their heat to earn a spot in their respective Grand Final.
In the varsity eight heat, the Huskies finished in 6:42.892, defeating second-place Navy by more than five seconds. In a similar result in the second varsity eight heat, NU defeated Navy again by more than five seconds, posting a time of 6:58.036. The Huskies' varsity four bested second-place Rutgers by more than seven seconds, crossing the line in 7:42.114. The third varsity eight was seeded directly into the Grand Final without a heat.
With the regatta operating on a condensed schedule due to expected wind, the crews moved quickly to finals racing.
In the varsity Grand Final, Navy, Columbia, and Northeastern moved out on the field to establish a three-crew race. Navy, which finished second to the Huskies in the heat, took control of the final in the third 500 and won the event with a time of 6:23.358. Columbia finished second (6:28.321), with Northeastern in third (6:32.058). Georgetown, Boston University, and Boston College, in order, rounded out the field. The third-place finish tied the second-best mark ever at the Sprints by NU in the varsity event. The Huskies earned a silver medal in 2012 and a bronze in 1998.
In the second varsity eight Grand Final, Northeastern overcame a sluggish start to move through much of the field. The Huskies rowed by Navy, Boston University, and Boston College over the middle thousand to finish second to Columbia (6:42.973). The Red and Black posted a time of 6:46.262. BC finished third, followed by BU, Navy, and Georgetown.
The day's Golden Huskies — the third varsity eight — led wire-to-wire and walked away with a convincing 7.1-second margin of victory. The third-place crew was more than 16 seconds off the Huskies' pace. Northeastern completed the Cooper River course in 7:04.375, followed by BU (7:11.493), BC, Rutgers, MIT, and Holy Cross.
In the varsity four Grand Final, the Huntington Avenue crew placed third, with a time of 7:29.108. Navy set the pace in the event, winning with a time of 7:16.639, with Boston College second in 7:23.173. Buffalo was fourth, followed by Rutgers and BU.
Next up for the Huskies will be the CAA Championship on May 18 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Northeastern has been the CAA's most dominant program, winning three titles in the five-year history of the conference championship regatta. Wilhelm's squads climbed the podium in 2009, 2011, and 2012. NU finished second in 2010 and 2013.
