BROOKLINE, Mass. – Trailing 1-0 in the final two minutes of regulation, the Northeastern men's soccer team (2-3-0) turned to a pair of freshmen to earn a dramatic, 2-1 overtime victory over UMass Lowell (2-4-0) on a rain-soaked Saturday night at Parsons Field.

Rookie Brad Fountain scored the game-tying goal on a blast from 24 yards out with 1:44 to play, before fellow freshman Ackim Mpofu won it just 1:02 into extra time with a shot that glanced off a defender in front of the goal.

UMass Lowell's Wuilito Fernandes had given the visitors the lead against the run of play with a beautiful curling effort from 26 yards out in the 64th minute. It appeared that the goal would stand up as the winner, before the resolute Huskies rallied to spoil the River Hawks' night.

With less than two minutes to play, redshirt senior Nick Goo found Fountain in space on the right wing. The freshman then stepped up and rifled a shot past UMass Lowell keeper Austin Kroll (nine saves) and into the upper left corner to knot the score at one apiece.

Northeastern carried the momentum into the extra session and won it on the first chance of the frame. Redshirt junior Mike Lobben played a long ball to Mpofu on the right wing. The freshman cut inside and ripped a shot toward the goal that glanced off the leg of a defender in front and into the back of the net, sending the Huskies into a frenzy on the field. Northeastern had gone 411 minutes without scoring, before netting twice in a span of 2:46 to snap a three-game skid.

The Huskies outshot UMass Lowell, 22-11, including six attempts by freshman Frantzdy Pierrot. Freshman keeper Jonathan Thuresson picked up his second win with one save in his fourth collegiate start.

Northeastern had several chances throughout the game, but could not solve Kroll for the first 88 minutes. The River Hawks keeper did well to stone Pierrot on a point-blank bid in the 48th minute, before diving to save a curling attempt from Lewis Aird minutes later.

Senior Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave also produced a pair of close calls with a blast that just missed wide left in the 76th minute and a free kick attempt that curled wide right in the 86th minute.

The Huskies are now 2-0 at Parsons Field this season and will look to maintain their perfect record on Tuesday against rival Boston University at 6 p.m.
