InfographicORONO, Maine – The Northeastern women's hockey team (7-12-4, 6-7-1 WHEA) scored five goals in the third period to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 win over Maine (8-12-3, 7-5-1 WHEA) on Saturday at Alfond Arena.Â
Sophomore
Hayley Masters scored two goals and added an assist on
Melissa Haganey's game-winner as Northeastern snapped a seven-game winless streak and picked up two huge points in the Hockey East standings.
Freshman
Denisa Krizova added two goals, while junior
Kendall Coyne posted three assists. Senior
Chloe Desjardins registered her second straight 40-plus save performance with 40 stops on 42 shots.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the third period, Northeastern scored three goals in a span of three minutes to stun the Black Bears and grab a 3-2 lead with 9:50 remaining.Â
Krizova opened the floodgates with her seventh goal of the year at the 7:10 mark of the third to get Northeastern on the board. Then, 2:50 later, Masters potted her first of the game off a feed from sophomore
Heather Mottau to tie the score at two-apiece.
Right off the ensuing face-off, the Huskies charged down the ice and scored again 10 seconds later when Masters set up Haganey for her second goal of the season at 10:10 of the frame.
Northeastern didn't let up and quickly added an insurance goal when Krizova converted a Coyne feed with six minutes to play to make it 4-2 Huskies.
Masters then put the cherry on top of an incredible third period with her second of the day, an empty-net goal, with 1:17 showing on the clock.
The five-goal period was Northeastern's second of the season; the Huskies previously scored five second-period goals against Providence on Nov. 16 in a 6-2 win.
With the win, Northeastern gained ground on Maine for third place in the Hockey East standings. The Black Bears have 15 points in 13 games, while Northeastern sits just behind with 13 points in 14 games.Â
The teams will play a pivotal rubber-match on Sunday in Orono at 4 p.m.Â
