WORCESTER, Mass. – Backed by Jonathan Thuresson's second shutout of the season, the Northeastern men's soccer team maintained its first-half lead against Holy Cross on Wednesday as the Huskies defeated the Crusaders, 1-0, to collect their first non-conference victory of the year.

Northeastern (2-9-2) posted 15 shot attempts during the midweek game, outshooting its opponent for the second straight match. After producing just one shot against the Huskies during the first half, Holy Cross (4-6-4) surged for 11 shots in the second half, finishing the game with 12 total attempts.

Harry Swartz took a season high, seven shots, against the Crusaders on Wednesday, ending the match with one more shot than teammate Khesanio Hall (six). Swartz and Hall combined to power home 13 of the Huskies' 15 shots and five of Northeastern's six shots on goal by game's end.

The Huskies' defensive unit, composed of Lewis Aird, Martin Nygaard, and Andrew Lombard, created offensive problems all night long for the Crusaders, especially in the first half. Holy Cross was flagged for three offside calls within a two minute span in the first half as the Crusaders managed to earn just one corner and one shot on goal by halftime.

NU would see plenty of chances to widen its lead as the second half progressed, but was unable to extend its advantage. Northeastern's defense continued to keep balls away from Thuresson, blocking three consecutive shots at the start of the second half.

With ten minutes to go in regulation, Lombard made an exceptional slide tackle to stifle yet another attack by the Crusaders' front line.

Northeastern will return to Parsons Field on Saturday, Oct. 24 for its final regular-season home game of the 2015 season. Senior Day festivities will be held prior to the match's 6 p.m. kick-off.

GOAL RECAPS

-Northeastern (31'): After NU had broken up a Holy Cross attack deep in its defensive side of the field, Kevin Carvalho fed a pass to Ackim Mpofu at the midfield line. Standing neck-and-neck alongside the Crusader's last defender, Khesanio Hall timed his run to perfection, making a break for the goal just as Mpofu struck a lead pass from midfield. With only the keeper to beat, Hall softly poked the ball over Holy Cross goalie Kevin Wright, having the ball bounce once before rolling in to put Northeastern ahead, 1-0.

STATS OF THE GAME

-Northeastern limited Holy Cross to just one shot attempt during the first half, tying the fewest number of shots the Huskies have allowed in a single half during the 2015 season. NU had previously held Fairfield to one shot attempt during the first half of the two schools' game on Sept. 12.
-The Huskies' eight-shot lead in the first half against Holy Cross is Northeastern's largest advantage in any half played this year.
-With a goal on Wednesday, sophomore forward Khesanio Hall increased his point streak to three consecutive games. In those three games, Hall has accumulated one goal and two assists.
-Sophomore Ackim Mpofu and freshman Kevin Carvalho each picked up their second assists of the season.
-Northeastern goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson has now earned five shutouts during his career.
