Francisco Palma helped the Dragons claim their second victory in league play during the 90th minute, placing a centering pass from Bayley Winkel towards the upper left corner for the go-ahead score. The Huskies had one final chance to tie the game on a set piece from 20 yards out with 24 seconds to play, but
Andrew Lombard's header sailed high just before the clock struck zero.
Northeastern (3-11-2, 2-6-0 CAA) posted an impressive 23 shots against Drexel (3-14-1, 2-6-0 CAA) on Saturday, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Frantzdy Pierrot led the Huskies with six shots, two on goal, while
Christian McKenna laced five shots, including three on goal.
Khesanio Hall and
Harry Swartz both ended the match with three shot attempts, combining for three shots on goal between the two players.
Jonathan Thuresson was left unchallenged for the majority of the game as the Dragons recorded just three shots on goal. Thuresson was stellar throughout the second half though as Drexel racked up eight shot attempts, but he was left with the tough task of fighting off a two-on-one counter-attack made by the Dragons during the last minute of action.
Northeastern had nine chances to score during the final 20 minutes of the match and controlled the end line well, winning five corners during the same time period.
Daniel Arvidsson and
Kevin Carvalho alternated a series of four corners from the left and right flags, respecitively, between the 76th and 78th minutes, but NU could only produce two shots and one on goal.
Drexel goalkeeper Jacob Jordan made six saves, while the Dragons were credited with two defensive team saves, preserving the shutout.
The Huskies entered Saturday's game needing a win and a James Madison loss in order to clinch the final spot in the CAA tournament. With conference results pending at the time of release, James Madison and William & Mary are left in the running for the No. 6 seed.
Northeastern will close out its 2015 schedule on Tuesday, Nov. 3, with a 7 p.m. game at Dartmouth.
GOAL RECAPS-Drexel (90'): After the Drexel defenders had cleared the ball out of their defensive box and up the right side of the pitch, Bayley Winkel darted past
