New Brunswick, N.J. – The Northeastern swimming and diving team finished third overall at the Frank Elm Invitational hosted by Rutgers University. The Huskies finished with 1,194.50 points, just behind Columbia with 1,233 points. The U.S. Naval Academy took the top spot with 1,804.50 points.
The three-day meet was highlighted by 45 athletes advancing to finals, 27 top ten finishes, 24 season bests, and three school records.
"I am extremely proud of all the swimmers and divers!" said Head Coach
Roy Coates. "We put the team into a highly competitive championship type meet against some of the finest competition in the Northeast. They were up for the challenge. The swimmers and divers performed, battled and came together to reach our goal of finishing in the top three. Three full days of competition is draining. However, they found a way to succeed because they were always there for each other. This sets us up well for the remainder of the dual meet season and Championships. "
Freshman
Megan Clark headlined the weekend, etching her name in the record books three times during the meet. On Friday, Clark swam a season best 23.29 in the 50 freestyle preliminary round before smashing the school-record with a 23.06 in the finals. Then on Sunday, Clark continued to blaze in the pool, hitting a school record 50.52 in the preliminary round of the 100 freestyle before breaking the record again that evening with a 50.29 swim. Both of Clark's school record times are in the top 100 in the country of all Division I swimmers.
On the diving board, juniors
Jacquelyn Gover and
Alyssa Seales qualified for the NCAA Zone A diving championships. The Northeastern divers dominated the field, placing all five divers in the top ten for both the one meter and three meter events. Gover took first overall in the one meter with a score of 276.15. Seales finished just behind with 274.20 points.
Next Up
Northeastern will travel to Islamorada, Fla. for its annual training trip. While in Florida, the Huskies will compete in the Orange Bowl Classic.
