Overtime PK lifts Wildcats past Huskies

Box Score | Season Statistics | Infographic

DURHAM, N.H. – Eyeing a point against New Hampshire upon entering overtime, the Northeastern men's soccer team was unable to come through on Monday night at Wildcat Stadium as Chris Arling's penalty kick during the 100th minute sent the Wildcats past the Huskies, 1-0.

Despite tallying only three shots, Northeastern (0-1-0) applied tremendous defense pressure to New Hampshire (2-0-0) throughout the match, weathering the Wildcats' 13 shots to preserve the scoreless stalemate.

NU backs Evensky Berleus, Gaku Lange, Dante Morrissette, and Moustapha Samb did well containing New Hampshire's talented corps of attackers, each playing the duration of the game's 99 minutes. Jonathan Thuresson saved all four of the shots on goal he faced from scrimmage.

Monday's match witnessed the debut of seven Northeastern newcomers, two of which landed in the Huskies' starting XI (Berleus, Morrissette). Adama Kaba and Cameron Okoro entered as first-half reserves for Northeastern, while Dan Munch, Griffin Sabatini, and Dom Galletti also made their inaugural NU appearances.

GOAL RECAPS

• New Hampshire (100'): Northeastern's clearance attempt from the right side of New Hampshire's attacking third was blocked backwards into the Wildcats' 18-yard box, presenting UNH with an odd-man look at the net. Charlton Muhlauri's sliding challenge to stop the play was deemed excessive, awarding the Wildcats a penalty kick with 45 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. Jonathan Thuresson guessed left on Chris Arling's penalty attempt, which Arling directed under the top netting for the match's only goal.

BEST NU CHANCES

• 22nd minute: With Khori Bennett to his right, Harry Swartz beat his defender and made a beeline to the top left corner of the Huskies' 18-yard box. Swartz flicked a left-to-right ball towards the right post, placing it just wide of the net.

• 32nd minute: Creating space on the edge of the Huskies' attacking third, Gerardo Milano struck a rolling ball from 30 yards away that landed easily in the arms of the Wildcats' goalkeeper, Andrew Pesci.
