Huskies' late-match charge not enough versus Hens

Box Score | Season Statistics | Infographic | Highlights

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Competing admirably with 10 men, the Northeastern men's soccer team played a resilient close to the second half of Saturday night's CAA match against Delaware at Parsons Field, despite being unable to produce the equalizing goal as the Huskies were defeated, 1-0, by the Blue Hens.

Redshirt-junior forward Harry Swartz led Northeastern (2-5-1, 1-1-0 CAA) with four shot attempts and was responsible for the Huskies' lone shot on target of the match: a fourth-minute strike that resulted in a routine save made by Todd Morton. Dan Munch came close to generating the match-tying goal during the waning minutes of the second half, but pushed his attempt inches too high, dinging it off the crossbar.

Receiving two cautions within a 70 second interval, Moustapha Samb was sent off during the 56th minute, opening the door for Delaware (4-2-1, 1-1-0 CAA) to stage the set piece that created the game's only goal. Halvard Ramstad headed in his first goal of the season from Thibault Philippe, putting the Blue Hens ahead on their 16th shot of the match.

Jonathan Thuresson saved five of Delaware's six shots on target, also withstanding Asgeir Eyporsson's header off the left post during the 52nd minute.

Down a man, Northeastern staged a comeback during the final 10 minutes of regulation, registering three shots and two corners. In addition to Swartz's two shots down the stretch, the NU captain sent a rolling ball across Delaware's open net, but the Huskies were unable to apply the equalizing touch.

GOAL RECAP

• Delaware (56th minute): Moustapha Samb's red card provided Delaware with a set piece from roughly 10 yards within the right flag. Thibault Philippe sent the free kick into the box, where Halvard Ramstad headed in his first goal of the season off the inner left netting.

BEST NU CHANCES

• Fourth minute: Controlling much of the opening possession, Northeastern steadily brought its back line of defenders forward and over the midfield line. Along the left sideline, Dante Morrissette began flipping the field, working the ball first to Gerardo Milano, who then found Charlton Muhlauri in the center of the midfield. Muhlauri played the ball forward to Adama Kaba, who turned and directed his second touch to Harry Swartz at the top of the 18-yard box. Swartz made a run towards the right end line and chipped a shot at Todd Morton that was routinely saved.

• 88th minute: Reduced to 10 men, Northeastern began picking up steam during the final 10 minutes of regulation. NU won a pair of corners during the 83rd and 87th minutes, both of which were taken by Dan Munch. After attempting the Huskies' second corner, Munch followed the ball and reamed the deflection towards the net, hitting the crossbar.
