HAMILTON, N.Y. -- In its first NCAA tournament game as reigning Hockey East champions, the No. 9/9 Northeastern women's hockey team couldn't overcome No. 3/3 Colgate's two-goal third period and fell 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Class of 1965 Arena.
Freshman
Aerin Frankel stood out in goal as she stopped 33 Colgate shots throughout the contest, including 14 saves in the third period before being pulled for an extra attacker late in the game.Â
Sophomore
Andrea Renner netted Northeastern's only goal as she tipped a
Lauren Kelly shot from the point at 11:24 of the second period.
After a scoreless first period, NU turned on the pressure and seemed to score the game's first goal as senior
McKenna Brand snapped a shot off the crossbar, but review showed that the puck was inches from crossing the goal line.
The Huskies killed off a 5-on-3 penalty that lasted 1:48 in the third period and used the momentum from that kill to generate their final push at the end of the game. Brand ran the show offensively for NU with eight shots on goal, while Renner put four pucks on net herself.
Colgate scored the game's first goal on the power play in the second period. The Raiders netted the winning goal at 1:37 of the third and added an empty net goal.
