Buy Gear! (Wednesday morning)
BOSTON – The Northeastern Athletics brand received an injection of energy on Tuesday with the introduction of the department's new logos and typography, announced by athletic director
Jeff Konya at the Howlin' Huskies Coaches Caravan on the university campus.
"We wanted to create a bold, innovative and striking new concept," Konya said. "Our team worked tirelessly to develop an identity unique and distinctive to Northeastern, and I think we hit a homerun. We believe these marks, along with an integrated marketing plan, show the vibrancy of Northeastern Athletics and is a product that our loyal constituents will gravitate towards."
The unveiling comes after six months of collaboration between athletics and university representatives that included focus groups featuring key stakeholders. Brian Sullivan, Northeastern's vice president and chief marketing officer, and Konya spearheaded the project with the intention of building the athletics system to extend the Northeastern Master Brand. The athletics platform re-contextualizes familiar elements and introduces new components that represent Northeastern's student-athletes, fans and teams.
"Athletics has a central place in Northeastern's brand because it energizes our community around that unique Husky spirit of excellence and commitment," Sullivan said. "The new athletics brand reflects that energy and spirit while still honoring our traditions."
Inspired by tattoo art, the King Husky logo represents the athletics department as it continues to move onward and upward, with its eyes trained on the bright future ahead.
"There is nothing like this in the marketplace right now, and I am very proud to say that this product was created in-house," Konya said. "We relied on people who are passionate about Northeastern and its brand, and they did a great job. It's been vetted internally and externally, and the marks have received a warm reception."
The application of the new logos will be seen throughout the Northeastern campus and beyond, with existing logos being replaced throughout athletic venues, on apparel and in other inventory moving forward. Along with the new marks, there will be an increased emphasis on consistency in brand presentation across the athletics spectrum, both at the varsity and club sports levels.
"I think the new logos represent the beginning of something great for our department," said men's soccer senior
Martin Nygaard. "The best programs in the country have recognizable logos and brands. Our new logos are unique, as they should representing a unique school with unique talent."
As a result, the "Split-N" and "Paw" logos will be retired while the "Husky Head," the current red-eyed Husky logo traditionally associated with men's ice hockey, will serve as a retro logo and be used on special occasions.
The new look will be used on the uniforms, gear and promotional material for all Northeastern varsity, club and recreational sports. Apparel with the new logo will also be available for purchase at the university bookstore and online at
Northeastern.bncollege.com. Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase team specific gear at GoNU.com in the coming weeks.
A NEW BREED IS BORN: Northeastern has been at the forefront of innovation since becoming the first university to adopt the "Huskies" nickname in 1927. Athletics has taken off in the years since, mirroring the upward trajectory of the university with the most successful season to date in 2017-18. And we're just getting started.
As we continue to move the pack forward, we embark on a bold new vision for the future with a striking new look.
