LIU Brooklyn nips Northeastern men's soccer in overtime, 2-1

Box Score Season Stats | Infographic | Highlights

BROOKLYN – Trailing 1-0 early in the second half, the Northeastern men's soccer team (1-1-0) applied pressure on the LIU Brooklyn (1-0-1) defense throughout the remaining 45 minutes before Ryan Massoud netted the equalizer in the 80th minute, but the Blackbirds got the last laugh on a Marius Koss strike in the fourth minute of overtime to give the hosts the 2-1 victory on Monday afternoon at LIU Field.

Massoud, the reigning CAA and New England Soccer Journal Rookie of the Week, buried his third goal of the season in just his second collegiate game for Northeastern, knocking a header off a Frankie de la Camara cross into the top right corner with 10:13 to play in regulation to send the match to overtime.

After the teams fought to a 0-0 deadlock through 45 minutes of play, LIU Brooklyn drew first blood early in the second half as Fredrik Mathisen potted his second goal of the season, taking a quick touch at the top of the box before rifling a shot into the lower left corner in the 49th minute, just out of the reach of Northeastern goalkeeper Noah Abrams (four saves).

Abrams came up big from there, making two big stops in the 53rd and 71st minute to keep the deficit at one while the offense went to work at the other end trying to solve the Blackbird defense and goalkeeper Sam Ilin (five saves saves).

It wasn't until the 80th minute when the Howlin' Huskies broke through, though, as Massoud buried his third goal on the young season when he headed a corner from de la Camera, who was entered into the match directly before the ensuing corner, into the top right corner for the equalizer.

The Blackbirds wasted little time in potting the game-winning goal in overtime, capitalizing on a Northeastern foul three minutes in before Koss fired a shot into the top right corner off a set piece from above the box.

Northeastern will be back in action on Friday night when the Howlin' Huskies travel to Vermont for a 7 p.m. match with the Catamounts.
