STORRS, Conn. – The No. 3 Northeastern women's hockey team staged another dramatic comeback on Friday as freshman
Chloe Aurard tied the game with 1:36 remaining in regulation and sophomore
Skylar Fontaine won the contest in overtime to send NU to a 2-1 triumph over UConn.
With the victory, Northeastern (20-3-3, 18-2-2 WHEA) clinched a top-four spot in the Hockey East playoffs and will host a best-of-three quarterfinal series at Matthews Arena on March 1-3.
For the second time in the last three games, the Huskies found a way to earn two points despite trailing late in the third period. Fontaine was the catalyst on the equalizer as she collected a loose puck in the defensive zone and found Aurard with a stretch pass up the right wing. Aurard settled the puck and blasted a rocket under the crossbar from the top of the circle for NU's NCAA-leading 24th goal of the year in the final two minutes of a period.
The Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week then won the game with 1:29 to play in OT. After a long spell of possession in the UConn zone, freshman
Alina Mueller zipped a cross-ice feed to Fontaine for a one-timer at the right of the cage to give NU its 20th win of the year and help the Huskies improve to 3-0-3 in overtime games this season.
Sophomore
Aerin Frankel made 15 saves to improve to 15-1-1 on the season and 14-0-0 in WHEA play. The only shot that got past the NU netminder was a snipe from Catherine Crawley at the 16:40 mark of the opening period.
The Huskies will head into Tuesday's Beanpot opener against BU (5 p.m.) with a five-game winning streak and seven wins in their last eight games.
