WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Senior
Brianna Storms and freshman
Alina Mueller of the Northeastern women's hockey team were honored with Hockey East weekly awards on Monday, as announced by the league office. Storms was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week after pitching a shutout in her first collegiate start on Friday, while Mueller took home Hockey East Player of the Week accolades following a five-point weekend.
Storms inspired Northeastern to a 3-0 victory over Merrimack on Senior Day, earning a shutout with 21 saves in the Huskies' final regular season home game. Prior to the start, Storms had appeared in just 28 minutes of action during her four-year career with six saves in a relief appearance vs. Boston College in 2015. With her shutout last Friday, Storms lowered her career goals against average to 0.68 and upped her career save percentage to .964.
Mueller earned her second WHEA Player of the Week nod this season – and her sixth weekly honor overall – after scoring two goals and adding three assists in a 1-0-1 weekend vs. Merrimack. The Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist scored NU's second goal on Friday in a 3-0 Huskies win, and then notched her first collegiate four-point game on Saturday in a 4-4 tie at Merrimack. Mueller opened the scoring, set up goals by
Tori Sullivan and
Kasidy Anderson, and then closed the scoring with the game-tying goal at 15:07 of the third period to bring her season point total to 48, which ties for the NCAA rookie scoring lead this season.
The No. 3 Huskies (23-5-5) will host Vermont in a best-of-three quarterfinal series at Matthews Arena starting this Friday, March 1 at 5 p.m.
