BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Gunnarwolfe Fontaine was the hero for the second consecutive night as he scored in the shootout and
Connor Murphy made three stops to lead No. 11 Northeastern (3-1-2, 3-1-2 HEA) to a shootout victory over Vermont (0-3-1, 0-3-1 HE), 2-2 (1-0 in shootout), on Sunday inside Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Matt DeMelis tallied his first goal of the season and
Ty Jackson added a power play goal for the Huskies.
After a scoreless first period, the Huskies' DeMelis deflected a shot to the back of the net from
Jayden Struble and
Riley Hughes to give NU a 1-0 lead in the second period. The Catamounts responded quickly as Jacques Bouquot knotted the score up at 1-1.
Northeastern would once again grab the lead, this time early in the third period, as Jackson scored on a one-timer from Struble and DeMelis. Just minutes later, Vermont had the answer again as Ray Vitolins tied the game.
After a couple of misses for the Huskies in the shootout, Fontaine stayed hot and buried a wrist shot past Vermont's goaltender Tyler Harmon. Murphy then remained perfect between the pipes denying Vermont's Vitolins to preserve the shootout victory for the Huskies.
A total of 12 players have scored for the Huskies this season. NU picked up its second conference series win in three series and will be back in action on New Year's Day.
