BOSTON - Northeastern men's rowing alum Dr. Craig Smallwood passed away suddenly on Friday, April 10, at the age of 36 years old. Dr. Smallwood competed for the Huskies from 2003-07 and served at Boston Children's Hospital as a registered respiratory therapist. He is survived by his beloved wife Erika, and their two children Sadie and Max.

Smallwood earned his PhD from Northeastern University in bioengineering in 2018 and his bachelor's degree in cardiopulmonary science with a concentration in respiratory therapy in 2007. Since 2010, Dr. Smallwood held the position of Respiratory Research Associate in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital. His academic work was nationally recognized fpr his expertise in the optimal utilization of existing healthcare data and the development of bedside decision support tools.
An accomplished rower, Dr. Smallwood earned a gold medal in the No. 2 seat of the Men's 8+ rowing for Canada at the 2003 U-23 World Junior Championships in Belgrade. Serbia. He helped lead the Huskies to a pair of top-seven finishes at the Men's Rowing National Championships in the Varsity 8+, finishing fifth in 2005 and seventh in '06. Dr. Smallwood rowed in the Head of the Charles Men's Alumni 8+ event with the Northeastern University Rowing Alumni (NURA) Husky Crew for the first seven years the event existed, stroking the NURA crew to the gold medal in that event in 2011, '12, '14, and '15. He is one of three Husky oarsmen to be in each of those seven lineups and served as the stroke from 2011-15.
