Northeastern Debuts Howlin' Huskies Virtual Awards on NESN

BOSTON - Northeastern Athletics will produce its annual Howlin' Huskies Awards virtually this year due to the global pandemic Coronavirus (COVID-19). The annual event highlights the accomplishments of the department on the field of competition, in the classroom and in the community, and features presenters and video recognitions from prominent media members and celebrities from across the country. The show will be televised on NESN, Saturday, May 23 at 3 p.m.

"It's important to continue to recognize the accomplishments of all these extremely talented student-athletes, especially during these unprecedented times," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Jeff Konya. "Part of our mission is to provide a distinctive student-athlete experience that leads to exceptional opportunities, and the Howlin' Huskies Awards is a key part of that mission. Although we cannot all be together and enjoy watching these achievements in person, we felt it was important to utilize our great partnership with NESN to showcase these stories on a local, regional and national stage."

The Huskies were well on their way to finishing inside the top 15 of the Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup Standings for the third consecutive year. The women's hockey team won an NCAA-best and school record 32 games, including their third straight Hockey East championship, routing UConn, 9-1, in the title game. The Huskies' Alina Mueller and Aerin Frankel were top-10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, and Mueller was named as a top-three finalist after producing 66 points and an NCAA-best 10 game-winning goals. Frankel (Led NCAA with .958 save percentage) and Mueller were the only teammates to make the CCM/AHCA First-Team All-American squad.

Academically, Northeastern student-athletes had a banner year. The Huskies earned an impressive 3.605 cumulative grade point average for the spring semester, the highest on record. Just over 91 percent of the student-athletes tallied a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and 75 Huskies earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The women's swimming and diving team posted a department-high 3.905 GPA and 11 student-athletes were perfect with a 4.0, while the cross country team led the men's teams with a GPA of 3.658. All 16 teams surpassed a 3.0 cumulative team GPA.

The men's basketball team became the fifth program in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) history to make three straight CAA Championship Game appearances, defeating No. 3 seed Towson (72-62) in the quarterfinals and No. 7 seed Elon (68-60) in the semifinals in Washington, D.C. at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Jordan Roland was named New England Player of the Year, winning the CAA scoring title and finished seventh in the country with 722 points, second-most in program history. Fellow senior Bolden Brace was named to the CAA All-Tournament team and finished fourth in school history in career 3-pointers made with 230.

The Huskies picked up their first sweep in the Beanpot Championship in over 30 years, defeating cross-town rival Boston University in both the men's and women's Beanpots. The men's hockey team earned their first-ever three-peat in double-overtime as Jordan Harris scored from the point to give Northeastern a 5-4 win in front of a record crowd of nearly 18,000 inside TD Garden. The women's hockey team defeated BU in double-overtime as Lauren MacInnis scored the game winner to give the Huskies their record 17th Beanpot title, and first since 2013, in front of a record crowd at BU.

The field hockey and men's cross country teams tallied runner-up finishes for the Huskies in the CAA. Camille O'Conor scored in the closing minutes against No. 23 William and Mary in the CAA Field Hockey Championship semifinals to advance the Huskies to their first CAA Championship Game since 2013. Cameron Dickson and Alexander Korczynski posted top-10 finishes to lead Northeastern to a second-place finish at the CAA Men's Cross Country Championships.

Senior Megan Clark, junior Skylar Fontaine, sophomore Tyler Madden and freshman Lauren Rowe each earned All-American honors for the Huskies. Clark was named CAA Swimmer of the Year for the second time in her career, becoming the first Husky to qualify for three straight NCAA Championships. Fontaine became the third NU women's hockey player to be named to the CCM/AHCA All-American teams this season, selected to the second team after tallying 42 points, the second most for any defenseman in the NCAA.

Madden finished third in the country in goals per game (0.70) and fifth in points per game (1.37) en route to being named Second-Team East All-American. He ended the season on a 10-game point streak and signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings in March. Rowe led the CAA with 43 points (16 goals, 11 assists) and was named CAA Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Region.
