BOSTON – Northeastern University graduate student
Maddie Mills notched two goals for the no. 3-ranked Northeastern women's ice hockey team (16-2-1) as they defeated Cornell (4-7-1) at Matthews Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Â
- Northeastern struck first early in the contest as Mills (8) notched a power play goal against her alma mater 3:38 into the first period, assisted by Alina Mueller (13) and Skylar Fontaine (18).
- Mueller was at it again with her 2nd assist of the afternoon, as she found Katy Knoll (4) rushing into the offensive zone just after her penalty expired. Knoll got a one-on-one chance with the goalie and dragged the puck through the crease before burying the backhand attempt for the 2-0 lead.
- In a penalty-laden second period, neither team was able to capitalize until late in the period when Mills netted her second of the game, ninth of the season, on a feed from Murphy. With a similar motion to Knoll's goal she pulled the puck through the crease and backhanded it in for the 3-0 lead.
- Just under six minutes into the third period Cornell broke through and scored their only goal of the afternoon on a power play.
- Junior netminder Gwyneth Philips made her fourth start of the season for the Huskies stopping 29 of 30 Cornell shots on net in the contest. She's now 3-1-0 in net this season.
- The Huskies ended the first semester with an eight-game win streak, and a 15-game unbeaten run spanning back to early October.
- With her two assists in the contest, Alina Mueller extended her team-best points streak to eight games. She has 12 points on one goal and 11 assists in that stretch.

The Huskies will not see another official NCAA contest until January 7, when they return to Hockey East action at 2 pm against Merrimack. They then travel to North Andover the following Saturday, January 8, to face off again at 2pm.
