Longtime Director of Sports Medicine Benny Miller Passes Away

BOSTON – Former Northeastern Director of Sports Medicine Benny Miller passed away at the age of 70 years old. Miller spent over 30 years at Northeastern University before retiring in 2016.

"All the student-athletes had the utmost confidence in Ben, because he cared for them, he listened to them and he was always there for them," said men's hockey head coach Jim Madigan. "Ben was the consummate professional who was loyal and dedicated to the student-athletes, Athletic Department and University. Ben, his lovely wife Brenda and two children embraced the Northeastern community and enjoyed being part of it. We are fortunate to have had Ben Miller share his many talents with us at Northeastern and greatly appreciate him for making us better people, a better department and a better university."

During his time with the Huskies, Miller cared for student-athletes, mentored staff, taught and supervised students and covered a majority of the intercollegiate sports as a physical therapist/athletic trainer including men's hockey for 17 years, men's and women's rowing for 30 years, football, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball and baseball.

"Ben was an amazing clinician, mentor, and friend," said Art Horne, former NU Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer for the Boston Celtics. "Always giving of his time, Ben cared for everyone that walked through the doors at Northeastern.

"On a personal note, Ben provided mentorship and guidance that cannot be found in a textbook or taught through weekend courses. His ability to connect and care for each and every person was unique to Ben, and was shared with all those he spent time with. His life will continue to shine through the work of his peers and mentees with the same caring actions that Ben lived each and every day."

A resident of North Reading, Mass., for 35 years, Ben earned degrees from Kansas State (psychology), Kansas (physical therapy) and Washington (master's degree in exercise science). After his retirement from Northeastern, he remained active through the Spaulding Adaptive Sports Program.

"Benny had the ability to make every coach, and every athlete feel like they were the most important person in the world at that moment," said Northeastern women's rowing head coach Joe Wilhelm. "He took the time to really get to know the athletes, and learn the nuances of every sport he worked with. He was totally committed to the health and well-being of the student-athlete above all else, while completely invested in the performance of the team, and the integrity of Northeastern University."

Ben is survived by his wife Brenda Hyland-Miller of 41 years. He is also survived by his children Benjamin Miller and partner Avital Livny, Meredith Miller and wife Bethany Ferriera, his granddaughter Alexandra Ferriera, his sister Debbie Weldon and husband Anthony Weldon, sister-in-law Debra Miller and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother James Miller and niece Katrina Fox.

"Benny Miller was a gentle man who cared deeply about every athlete, staff member and the faculty," said head team physician Dr. Gian Corrado. "He was a friend to me and to anyone who appreciated his gentle compassionate manner. Benny provided the scaffolding for my career and thousands of others in physical therapy, athletic training and compassionate care. He was a great man who left behind a wonderful family and a legacy of over 20 years of service to Northeastern University which has missed him every day since he left us."
