BOSTON – San José State University announced the hiring of
Jeff Konya on Saturday as its new Director of Athletics. Konya led Northeastern to three consecutive top-15 finishes in the Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup Division I-AAA standings and was named 2020-21 NACDA Athletics Director of the Year for the second time in the last four years.
Konya was selected as the Director of Athletics at Northeastern on Jan. 10, 2018. The university will immediately begin a national search for his replacement.
During Konya's tenure, the Huskies produced unprecedented NCAA postseason performances and multiple championships. The women's ice hockey team made its first-ever Women's Frozen Four and National Championship Game, while baseball and men's cross country won their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association championships. The men's track and field team won a CAA record sixth consecutive outdoor championship, while women's rowing captured its seventh consecutive CAA title and finished 20
th at the NCAA Championships. The men's rowing team tallied a fourth-place finish at the IRA Championships with all three boats qualifying for the grand final race.
Northeastern student-athletes continue to distinguish themselves in the classroom, graduating at rates well above its conference and national peers. NU qualified for the NCAA Academic Excellence Pool after outperforming most universities in Academic Progress Rate (APR) and student-athletes achieved a 3.405 cumulative grade point average during the spring semester, marking the 27
th consecutive semester student-athletes have earned at least a 3.0 GPA. The spring semester was the third highest on record for the athletic department, following up the department's highest semester GPA of 3.417 in the fall 2020.
The Huskies are currently eighth in the 2020-21 Learfield IMG College Cup Directors' Standings, which would be Northeastern's first-ever top-10 finish. The final standings will be released on July 2.
