BOSTON – Hockey East Championship MVP
Alina Mueller scored two goals and recorded an assist as the No. 3 Northeastern women's hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 3-1, to win a fifth-straight Hockey East Championship title on Saturday at Matthews Arena. The fifth-straight title is an unprecedented feat in Hockey East history.
With the victory, the Huskies have clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be on Sunday, March 6 at 9 p.m. on ESPN News. Mueller earned MVP honors and was joined by
Skylar Fontaine,
Aerin Frankel,
Brooke Hobson and
Maureen Murphy on the All-Tournament team.
Fontaine became the all-time leading scorer in Hockey East Tournament play with 25 career Hockey East Tournament points (8 goals and 17 assists), with her second assist of the evening.
- After trailing UConn 1-0 through more than half of the game, the Huskies scored three unanswered goals to secure the win.
- Mueller tied the game with 17 seconds to go in the second with helpers from Skylar Fontaine and Brooke Hobson.
- Just 30 seconds into the third frame, Mueller scored again and gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by Fontaine and Maureen Murphy.
- Chloe Aurard gave Northeastern their third goal of the game at the three-minute mark of the third period off assists from Murphy and Mueller.
- Aerin Frankel finished the game with 27 saves on 28 shots faced.
