Cubeddu, Rendle Lead Huskies Past Warriors

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – In its non-conference finale, Northeastern University (4-6-6) defeated Merrimack College (4-7-2) by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Martone-Mejail field.

After Merrimack took an early lead, it was three unanswered goals from the Huskies that would dictate the game – two games came from junior Fabrizio Cubeddu, his first two goals of the season, with the game-winner going to Edward Rendle early in the second half.

  • The Warriors got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead just 16 minutes into the contest.
  • Northeastern responded 15 minutes later as a deflected clearance fell to Cubeddu after outmaneuvering his defender. He stepped into a shot and hit a hard shot that blew past the keeper for his first goal of the season, knotting the score up at 1-1.
  • Just minutes into the second half it was another first-time goal scorer, Rendle, notching his first career goal. On a free kick from the Northeastern box, Lucas Barankiewicz delivered a long ball all the way over the defense, and Rendle had the speed to beat the defenders to the ball in the box. Rendle took a shot off the bounce and tucked it in the lower left corner past the goalkeeper for the 2-1 lead.
  • Cubeddu added on some insurance in the 66th minute on a give-and-go play with Fraser Brown, where Cubeddu stole the ball in the midfield, and passed the ball forward to Brown at the top of the 18. Brown left the ball off to Cubeddu who stepped into another powerful shot that snuck just under the crossbar for the 3-1 lead.
  • The win is Northeastern's first come from behind win since last Senior Day, October 22, where the Huskies overcame a goal in the 11th minute to win 2-1 at Parsons Field.
  • NU's win ends a nine-game winless streak.

The Huskies wrap up the regular season this Saturday, October 28 at 6 p.m. as they host #22 Hofstra at Parsons Field for Senior Night. A win over Hofstra would give Northeastern a chance to make the CAA Tournament.
